I have some 1970's Atlas F9 wheelsets with split plastic gears.  I currently have new wheelsets and gears on order from Northwest Shortline.

Has anyone ever had any luck in resetting these gears with some type of adhesive?  I can experiment as I have nothing to lose, just wondering what recommendations for cleaning and setting the gears are.

I recently tried some Loctite brand liquid CA and have been quite impressed.

Your Thoughts?

You have 2 major problems.

#1 a gear that is typically made of nylon or some other industrial plastic, being soaked in lubricant for much of it's life, near impossible to glue

#2 A gear pressed over a shaft with an intentional interference stretch fit that cracked- thus making the teeth out of pitch. Basically every time the crack between the teeth tries to mate to the other gear teeth, there will be a bump, notch, or jam. At best the teeth wear faster and at worst, this just breaks and jams.

So I'm not saying it's impossible, but on a line from "likely" to "never ever in a million years"

"Wondering why these pinions aren't made of brass on the Atlas and some others.  Is it really that much more to produce."

Well, squirting some liquid into a mold and producing 50 at a time for about 5 cents each compared to machining brass ones one at a time...yes, big difference.  That said, I know that people are using the shapeways parts and they are cheap, so why argue with what works.
