Both couplers crumbled, is there a Kadee replacement that will fit in the Atlas coupler box?

Just use a Kadee 740 with the trip pin cut off (if you prefer) and drill - tap the mounting pads for a 2-56 screw. It takes liitle time to do this. Toss those lousy Atlas couplers.
Simpler solution. Get a pair of Kadee 745's (plastic boxes) and 2mmx8mm screws. Loosely set the center hole, then the rear hole into the threads and then tighten everything up. I've done it with metal-chassis Atlas cars. You may need a shim (Micro-Mark) and the coupler box does stick out a bit, but on an engine it's probably not as visible.

Here’s a Kadee 745 installed the same way Matt described. Reuse the Atlas factory mounting support and you shouldn’t need any additional shims to end up at the correct height. (The Atlas factory couplers are a little low as I recall). The draft gear box extends past the pilot face a little, but that’s true of the prototype as well.
I didn’t cut the trip pin when I did this installation, but agree getting rid of it looks better and that’s what I’m doing these days. (I’ll have to go back and clip this one).
