This might be old news, but I have begun to look into Atlas SD40 models (really want a Clinchfield) and for some reason the front porch sticks out too long. Did Atlas tailor these more to SD40-2 standards than a straight 40? I have been comparing the Atlas Clinchfield image to the real locos, and it just seems way too far out. Their SD35 models seem correct, and I have a few of these.

If these are based more on the SD40-2 frame, then I can see repainting one into Family Lines units which I remember very well growing up.

Thanks,

Larry,

I think it depends on the angle of the photo. I've seen ATSF prototype photos that from a high front angle suggest a lot of front porch on the real thing too. (I'd link to one I have in mind, but the hyperlink function doesn't seem to operate anymore). Out of curiosity, I did a quick search for Clinchfield SD40 images. In addition to prototype pictures, I found a picture of the Atlas model, and yes, it looks like there's a lot of front porch. But I think Atlas got it right. At any rate, here are a few pictures of one my Atlas models, which might help you decide for yourself:

The Atlas SD-40s are accurate, the reason Atlas did not produce SD-40-2s is they require a 3 scale feet[3/4"] longer frame giving them even larger porches than the SD40s. I had discussed this with the late Jim Weaver at the 2008 Chicago meet[the last one attended by Atlas as I recall] In more recent years with engine and electrical  upgrades in older carbodys the SD40-2 designation may be stenciled on certain Road names[the Atlas FUREX SD40s are a good example of this]
