Greeting everyone. So I just purchased a Lionel 1-700e from 1990. I know Lionel reproduced the semi scale freight cars. But, I'm kinda wanting different freight cars I don't have. My question is are Atlas steam era cars such as the 36' reefers close to scale? Does anyone know an approx measurement of these cars? I'm looking at maybe a couple wood sided reefer, tanker, and wood sided caboose. I want that 1920-30's look to the rolling stock.Just don't want undersized cars for this engine and tender. The 6464 look small. Thanks for any input!

Pretty sure that Atlas cars are scale sized.
The Atlas 36' reefer is 9 inches long and the 40' reefer is 10 inches long - they are scale.
But....hudsons pulled passenger cars....not reefers.....😉
Don’t overlook the Lionel Milk Cars. Hudson’s did see use in that service. These are nicely done and are scale cars that willlook right with your Hudson. Forum member Superwarp had a Century Club set for sale on the Forum a while back. 5 NYC cars plus a caboose. Might still be available. Separate sale NYC cars were offered along with numerous others that would have run into New York City.

Yes, @superwarp1 has a great deal on the milk car set; I’m a big fan of the Lionel scale milk cars.

Re 4-6-4's pulling freight trains, there is a photo out on the internet of double-headed NYC Hudsons pulling a coal train !! Both the Burlington and the Canadian Pacific employed Hudsons on freight trains in the 1950's.
The Lionel milk cars are scale. 40 ft. Prototype and 10” in our world. The earlier cars feature probably the nicest looking 3 rail trucks ever made. If historical accuracy is important. The NYC, Bordens, Sheffield Fatms and Dairyman’s League would be correct. If that’s not important. They made many other colorful versions. I’d just avoid the recent run of them. To many issues.

Thank you for the info. I'm going to stick I think with the 90's versions. Looks like the 6-17xxx numbers are the way to go. Trainz has really nice prices. Probably do a matching Lionel woodside caboose. Thanks for the help! Would have never thought of the milk cars.
Ok, got 3 dark gray milk cars and the NYC scale smoking caboose for less than 100 bucks from trains! Will post pics. Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions!
For the record, I’m a big fan of the Atlas reefers as well; I use them on my milk train with the Lionel.

Later in life (and occasionally earlier) the NYC 4-6-4's pulled freights just fine. There are some good photos of a pair of NYC Hudsons pulling a long train of hoppers, full of coal.
There are also photos of Hudsons on work trains and wreck trains - you know, cranes, wheel cars, gons, ballast....right before they were shot and killed.
The pre war cars sold with the Hudson are scale size. At the same time they made the same cars with different trucks and couplers and called them, or some called them, semi scale even though they have scale dimensions.
The 1990 repros were made like the semi scale cars with big couplers and some like the caboose with the trucks in the wrong place. Still scale size.
Atlas O and Atlas Trainman are scale size. Atlas Industrial Rail are smaller.
If you want scale size cars most everyone has made them, even Williams.
