A Z4000 should run conventional engines with no issue. Are you talking about the Z4000 Remote Commander System (#40-4001)?

A Z4000 will run conventional engines even without the Remote Commander system, but you'll have to be standing next to it, operating its throttle handle, in order to do so.
The Remote Commander, when added, allows you to walk around the layout and control the engine anywhere nearby from a handheld wireless controller.
