I've had several examples, in both 2 and 3 rail. I think they are quite nice, and I recently got a set of "2 rail":

auel 1

Here's one truck, next to an Auel 3 rail set of wheels:

auel 2

Big difference in wheel size, yet the "2 rail" wheel sets are not insulated from each other.

What's up with that?

Thank you. They seem to be a pretty close match. These wheels I have are strange, most of the wheelsets are insulated, and the wheels on either end of the axle have different depth flanges. (Different casting for the insulated and non-insulated wheels) On closer inspection, the non-insulated wheels actually do say Auel on them. I have 36 of these that came in a lot of parts off Ebay, and they're not doing me any good, so if someone needs any Auel wheelsets I can sell some. I can probably swap the insulated wheels out for non-insulated wheels to make matching sets.

Dang, I just made a discovery on one of my Cast aluminum Alexander (I think ) hoppers... Realized I have at least one set of the Auel trucks with the opening journal boxes!!  To this point I had only ever seen pictures and the catalog images lol.  I guess they do exist!  Now on the hunt for a few more pairs lol.

I gotta say, all covered in 60 year old paint, I never would have noticed them except I was flipping over some cast hoppers comparing the underframes and just happened to notice one journal lid that fell open lmao....  Otherwise I think they pretty much look like the normal trucks.  Seems like the casting cross section is about the same as the normal ones as well.  I must have 12 or 15 sets of the normal ones by now and I agree with Bob, they are some nice looking trucks 80 years old or not.  Def like the rib back wheels too. The question is which cars should I install them on lol.  I normally try to keep or install an original set of trucks on my old cars.  So if it was Athearn, it gets Athearn trucks, same for Walthers cars, Lobaugh Scale Craft etc.  I know you could consider Auel to be an exception since they only made the 200 ton flat but I guess I need to decide what cars get those trucks.  I have some on a few of my decent built Westbrook cars for now.

Here are a couple  I have that were hand lettered, top is Scale Craft and the bottom is the I think Alexander or other at 17/64ths. The top one the guy did the complete MP herald pretty decent. it gets a little messy in a couple of areas, but heck that would be a hard herald to do I would think.

I think both of these guys did a real good job on the hand lettering.  Maybe we need a thread showing off old hand lettered cars, I know I have a bunch, I am sure Bob and Carey do as well as a few others.  Lost art for the most part....
