Recently added the Gateman with two insulated track pieces I made with 36 curves on each side of the plug in 10” straight (due to the location of the Gateman on the layout). I noticed that occasionally as a car goes through this section there are small sparks from the wheels. Is this normal? Any advice?

The rails are now the contacts of an electrical switch, so yes, normal operation.
And the dirtier the track and wheels get, the more sparks you will get.
A longer trip section, allows two, or more axles, to engage the electrical common circuit at one time. May be a better connection, less off/on, when the sparks occur. IMO, Mike CT. Clean wheels also very important.
