Depends on how heavy and where you live. Also don't forget insurance.

For me, being in California, its $50 give or take...depending on which engine and its value for the insurance.
Use the UPS calculator to get a ballpark cost.
If you belong to AAA, UPS will also give you a discount.

If it is under warranty check with Lionel about the Military Veterans Free Shipping. I'm not sure they still do it but it's worth asking.

USPS, UPS and FedEx all have web sites where you can enter your package info, starting point and destination. You can then compare which service will be the most cost effective for you.

USPS and UPS (sure FedEx too) rates are based on distance and weight so an average is almost impossible to say. I can get an average loco coast to coast for $20 or so....but it goes up quick for a large steamer or longer than average box. Check websites for EST.
