Well, the CC-M only replaces the motor driver board, so if it isn't already upgraded to command, you'll have to also add the R2LC to do the command upgrade.
Besides the R2LC you will also have to replace the audio board as it only works in conventional despite looking identical to one that is Command capable. BTDT. I have used RS4 generic steam boards before Lionel was selling RS5 boards.

The command upgradable models typically came with Signal Sounds, in which case you need both boards, the RS4 and the power supply. Of course, knowing exactly what he has would be useful here.
I recall the audio power board is the same. Thats why we were surprised the audio board needed to be replaced. It appears to be early modular. Pretty cheesy on Lionel's part. I am assuming this is 6-28065.
This is what I used on a friends engine.

Along the same line, I have a K-Line 2-8-2 number K 3615-1060CC. I want to add cruise control to it. I`m thinking the CC-M is the correct one. Any help will be great.

For that engine the Cruise M is a drop in replacement. Very easy to do. Swap two connectors and solder one wire.

The correct 6- product number is definitely needed here.
There are at least two different versions of electronics used in the upgradeable "Baby" locomotives. The earliest ones used an unusual modular motor driver board (with associated motherboard), which I don't believe is easily compatible with Electric RR products unless you reconfigure the locomotive with a new motherboard and associated wiring harnesses. The later ones use a standard DCDR, and assuming everything fits, you should be able to use an Electric RR Cruise Commander.
Pete, I believe that RailSounds quirk only occurred on the 6-28065 and not the other upgradeable locos. (As John said, most of those came with SignalSounds.) In an effort to introduce additional RailSounds functionality into conventional mode, a Conventional RailSounds chipset was created to allow CrewTalk and TowerCom activation in conventional. To make that happen, the TMCC functionality was removed to free-up code space for conventional. So while you needed to replace the board to upgrade to full RailSounds on your loco, in reality only the chips needed to be swapped-out.

That locomotive should have had cruise from the factory, that's what the CC stands for.
Good to know about being able to swap chips. That conventional audio board is in my junk box now. Thanks for the update.

A lot of engines had the CC suffix but did not have cruise. The Mikado was one of them. Blame the printers or K-Line changed their minds.
Pete
I was told CC stood for command control.

I'm thinking this is the engine out of a 6-21988 set...guessing here because I bought it used. I upgraded it...it has the railsounds board and the tmcc board installed...but no cruise...so if it's drop in it's worth it to me...major surgery...nah...
When that set came out, you got the railsounds bds for free if you purchased the radio bd. I upgraded my son’s when first purchased. Did one for a friend a couple years ago and not so anymore!

K-Line used the W suffix for conventional engines, S for TMCC and later CC for Cruise but many that got the CC suffix did not have Cruise. One scale Hudson got Cruise and had the CC suffix. I don't believe any of the Scale Mikados came with cruise even though most had the CC suffix. I know my NYC Mikado did not have it.

If it's from the 6-21988 set, then it's the 6-28065 that we've discussed above.
It should be from the second batch of upgradeable locos, and therefore have the OEM DCDR motor driver. (It couldn't hurt to double-check inside.)
Assuming the Electric RR board fits (it replaces the DCDR), then you should be good to go.

The fit is a key requirement. Just ran across a Lionel C420 that the CC-M wouldn't fit into the shell. I even tinkered with the angle of the board, but where it sits, it just doesn't quite fit.
