If it is real dirty and greasy,  I wash it with dishwashing soap and an old shaving brush.  Rinse it with water and put it in front of a fan till its totally dry (couple hours in south Texas).  Otherwise I use q tips with rubbing alcohol.  I use a toothpick to clean the gaps in the armature.

I put ample grease in the well such that the grease on the gears has a hard time leaving the gears.  I use Lucas red "n" tacky grease.
