TrainWorld has posted the Base 3 will be available on March 29th. Is this just another date being thrown out there? Has anyone heard anything? Thanks........

The Lionel Store shows 8/12/2024. I would think this is more accurate.
The TW site currently shows Aug 31st...
Estimated Availability | Saturday 31st August 2024 |
---|
All guesses.
Play it safe.
Put it in your will for your kids to pick up.

This moving date is frustrating. TW had end of March a few weeks ago, then as stated above it changed to August. Also, does not help MTH DCS has that moving date too. Last I looked on TW they had end of March.
Talking with my local shop(Legacy) they don't know.
I got back into the hobby a year ago, and it's okay using the MTH wifi app or the Lionel Bluetooth, but the limited capability the apps have only work for me for so long.
Really makes me question the O Gauge hobby and get why you'll see folks jump to HO.
Watching this Blunami stuff is interesting.

People get into three O gauge for different reasons. Operating accessories, whimsical toys, and user friendly command control are often factors. But heft and size are big draws. HO is a different beast and has some big advantages, but operating accessories, whimsical toys, easy command control, heft and size are not the advantages over O. Variety of product, operation in a small space and prototypical fidelity are HO's advantages to most folks I know. Different beasts, in essence.
Making a decision based upon a product's availability during the pandemic and immediate post-pandemic supply issues that last a year or two or three does not seem best for most folks, I'd think. Your mileage obviously varies.

Just one of the reasons I switched.
Base3 is in production. The Lionel Store date is accurate.

Great news! Thanks for the update.
What is the release date of the CAB3 app? Has it slipped also?

If I remember from the Live Legacy Video, Dave said about a month before the Base3 ships.
I'd be shocked if the CAB3 app wasn't ready for when the BASE3 came out since it's an integral part of the release!
Thanks @Dave Olson.....Nice to get the info from the source!

The only thing "sad" here is a comment that adds zero substance and attempts to gaslight a conversation that doesn't need it.
NO REASON to turn this thread into a "*****ing" session. I have deleted the posts that took this announcement off track. Getting sick and tired of folks turning threads into negative rants. If you don't like the product or have confidence in it, then don't buy it and stop raining on other folk's parade.
Thank you Alan
Do you all think it is worth pre-ordering the Base 3/Cab3 now or waiting?

I think this all depends on your situation. If you have a working TMCC or BASE2 system and you're happy with it, probably not. If you are in need of a command system and don't want to pay the high 2nd market prices then yes.
I ordered one when it was first announced back in 2022. If you’re thinking about it, pre order it now! Like everything else you’re going to pay more down the road or will be left waiting depending on inventory levels. Just my two cents.
I wonder how many people that pre-ordered are no longer in the hobby and forgot they pre-ordered or might even no longer be alive?

Probably less than those who ordered the WTIU.

I cancelled mine, with Lionel’s track record I feel a wait and see for a few software updates makes sense . I hate spending a good some of cash to be the (test bed).
I'm sitting on the fence. I don't need it - I have TMCC and am in no hurry to use a phone or tablet. Not worried about software - if there's an issue, updates will be available. Also not worried about future availability or having to buy at an inflated price on the secondary market - unlike MTH, Lionel can maintain an inventory, so I expect that they will run a bunch of extras, and make more in the future.
I'm not in for the first batch since I don't see that it'll bring a lot for me personally, I already have the Legacy system. I suspect at some point I'll probably pick one up when I see an operational benefit. I'm hoping in conjunction with this they do some work on the LCS system software.
I pre-ordered the base 3 when I sold my 990 system a month or so ago. I suspected base 2's will start flooding the market when the base 3 ships later this year decreasing prices on the secondary market. I have a backup remote, so I won't be stuck w/o one until it breaks.
The owner of the retailer I pre-ordered at said I was getting the last one they're slotted for. So, Base 3's may be difficult to come by shortly after release.
I wanted the base 3 to use the Lioncheif function for a project I am working on. I am not concerned about Lionel's "track record" as I looked to the delay for 90 and am extremely satisfied with the result there.
For me, it made sense to sell the 990, buy a Base 3, and have cash left to spare. The final anticipated benefit was my hope that not having a Legacy base would inspire me to overhaul my Layout and clean my storage. That has yet to come to fruition.
Can the cab 3 be used with the LCS WI-FI or will I need the base 3 to use the cab3
@trainbob posted:Can the cab 3 be used with the LCS WI-FI or will I need the base 3 to use the cab3
The Base3 has the equivalent of the LCS WiFi built in.
There is only a Base3, no Cab3 (physical remote). There is the Cab3 smartphone app.
@trainbob posted:Can the cab 3 be used with the LCS WI-FI or will I need the base 3 to use the cab3
My guess is no. According to Lionel's site, you can control via Bluetooth and/or the Base3 concurrently.
"[Cab3 app] offers two modes that can operate concurrently. The Bluetooth tab will feel familiar to the LionChief APP, with all-new features being included. The Command Base tab connects to the new Base3 and gives full control of all Lionel command types..."

Dave answers this at the 53:25 mark of the Live Legacy Users Group Meeting last fall.
Patience builds character and tempers the human tendency toward instant gratification. Viewed in that light, the wait for the anticipated arrival of Lionel's CAB3 could be a hobby-based lesson about life in general. Meanwhile, like Gunrunner John, I'm content with TMCC and my CAB1 -- and my trains with LionChief technology.

As usual. The voice of reason. My exact thoughts when they first announced the Base3. It might take a bit to fix any issues after it does hit the market. After watching Marty’s video with Dave on it I feel as though Lionel is really trying to get this thing correct before it’s released. Stuff happens. I do have 3 Lionchief engines on my small layout. I don’t have the curves to handle the Legacy engines. Maybe something with 42 to 54 required curves. I really don’t see me getting too many more engines period. Much less something I can’t operate with my Cab2, Lionchief APP or the universal remote. In short order, how big is your layout and what engines are you planning on operating.

I'm buying mine early! When the first run sells out, I can listen to everyone complain they can't find one.

I have two Legacy systems, one on my bench and one on the layout. I think I can hold out for a few years if necessary.

Good luck with that. I have multi[let Cab -2’s and have no issues. Since they have had multiple failures in the past…..I still say wait for the shake out. You’re either going to be right or it’s crying time again……..
seeing as March 29th is tomorrow, we'll see how many of us get emails on Monday saying our pre-orders are on the way. I pre ordered mine through Mr. Muffins Trains, so I'll be watching.

Earlier in this thread, Dave Olson of Lionel said that the ship date on the Lionel store is correct. That date is 8/12/24. https://www.lionelstore.com/Lionel-Base3

I guess wonder where it's being shipped on that date. Is it leaving China on that day or leaving for distributors on that day? I could make a difference of a month or more in actually getting your hands on one.
I have always assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that the ship date is when the item will be available from Lionel here in the USA. And presumably from their direct dealers and distributors. So I would guess the August date is when the Base 3 will begin to be available to consumers. Best to confirm with Lionel if this is important to you.
