I just received my Legacy #993 expansion set from Trainworld and have been trying to get it to work but when I turn the CTC power button on all I get is "Base not found". So I press the scan button but it does not link to the base of my Legacy #990 set. Question 1: Does the base of #993 get connected to the base of #990. It looks like base #993 is just a charger for cab2 handset. I can't tell what version of software is installed in my new cab2 handset but the module that came with it is version 1.0. Does this mean I have to ship this to Lionel for a hardware update. There is no silver dot on the bottom of the base which would indicate this fix has been done. Am I missing something here. Thank you for any light you can shed on this.

Does the primary Legacy unit see the base? What channel are you using? You might have to search for the base if you have changed the channel. What version of legacy are you running in the 990 unit? Anything that is 1.3 or above and the remote and base should talk to each other.
Sounds like you got a very old 993 if it shipped with 1.0 blue module and no silver dot. Unless the CAB-2 has the silver dot in/near the battery compartment it will need to go back to Lionel before you can upgrade it to any other version. Personally I would get a fresh 993 from Trainworld.
The 993 base is nothing but a battery charger and a place to store the CAB-2 handheld. The CAB-2 will automatically see the 990 base and will reflect the settings stored in the base
If you decide to ship it back, here is the info you need to know http://www.lionel.com/Customer...ce/LegacyBaseReturn/
Does the primary Legacy unit see the base? Yes #990 base and handheld do work together.
What channel are you using? Channel 1
You might have to search for the base if you have changed the channel. I scanned several times but still nothing.
What version of legacy are you running in the 990 unit? V1.3
Anything that is 1.3 or above and the remote and base should talk to each other. But they are not. I guess the #993 handset is no good.
I did find the silver dot on the inside of the battery compartment and not on the outside like I thought.
Thanks for any info you can shed on this topic.
If you found the silver dot then go ahead and upgrade the 993 handheld unit. If you have the 1.3 modules use them.
Might as well upgrade all your stuff to 1.51 after getting it up to 1.3.
Let's just get it up and running and worry about 1.51 afterwards.
My 993 would not find the base. It came with V1.0 software. I up graded
the Cab2 to what the base had, V1.3 or higher. The Cab2 now works.

the 993 is the base. it is just a base with no command system only a charger.
a cab2 is a cab2 no matter if it comes with the 990 or 993.
I did plug the Cab2 V1.3 blue module in the #993 handset but even by pressing the info button or any button the screen on the handheld won't change to anything but the "Base not found" Is there a key combination I can press to get out of the "Base not found" screen or is there a way to reset the handheld.

Hi, Below are the instructions from the V1.5 manual. I believe that they are the same for all versions though. Hope this helps, and good luck.

My #993 came with the module for V1.0 Cab2. The Cab2
could not find the base. Loaded the module for V1.4 Cab2
into the Cab2. The Cab2 now works.
The #993 add on did not sell very well so they may all have
been shipped with V1.0 soft ware in the Cab2 and never
up graded.
Load what ever version of Legacy you have, V1.3 or higher into the Cab2.
The directions are in the Legacy manual. It should correct your base
not found problem.
As per the instructions above, you MUST be holding the SET button when you power up the base with the module installed. When you do that, it'll start the upgrade process.
OMG...Thank You for the help...it is working now...I was using the manual that came with the #993 and that page you sent is not in it but I just checked the V1.3 manual and there it is...Wow, I feel stupid...sometimes I overlook things in my frustration...this is why this forum is such a valuable resource for rookies like me. A million thank you's...
We were all rookies once.

So, based on this there was no need to return the #990 Version 1.0 base and remote to Lionel for an upgrade.
Trainman9, The #990 wasn't V1.0, just the #993. So it was just a matter of discovering how to update the CAB2 from the #993 to match the #990 base and CAB2.

Not to be redundant but I know that he had an upgraded version of the #990 base to Version 1.3. My comment had to do with the fact that he and others were able to upgrade a CAB2 that came with their #993 sets from Version 1.0 to an upgrade version 1.3 and above without having to send the CAB2 back to Lionel for an upgrade.
It has been posted several times that the only way to upgrade a Legacy System to any software version above V 1.0 was to either have a unit with a silver dot or send the base and remote back to Lionel for an upgrade.
Several people have posted that they have successfully upgraded a Legacy CAB2 remote, that was not upgraded by Lionel, to a higher level software simply by installing the higher level module and it worked.
So, I ask the question again. This seems to be in direct contrast to previous information that indicated in order to upgrade a Legacy system that was version 1.0 required that the base and remote be sent back to Lionel for a hardware and software upgrade.
Based on this new information there never was a need to send the units back to Lionel for any upgrade.

Wrong, If you look at his postings he DID find the silver dot when he looked at it a second time. You cannot upgrade an original 1.0 CAB 2 or Base without it going back to Lionel or it having the silver dot which means Lionel modded it before it was shipped to the dealer.
FWIW the only CAb-2's I ever saw with a silver dot came with the 993's. I never saw a 1.0, 990 set with one
I do not know the reason for returning the Legacy system
for up grading. The New Legacy I received had V1.4 software
in it. The Cab2 had problems with the CTC button not turning
off and other problems with the buttons. I picked up a #993
to get the older Cab2. It had V1.0 software and would not
find the base. Up grading to V1.4 made the Cab2 work and
find the base.
I have had no problems up grading any Cab 2 or base to the
the last software, V1.51. All Cab2s will upgrade to the latest
soft ware but the newest Cab2s that came with V1.4 will not
work with V1.3 software.
The return of the Legacy for upgrading may have been for changes
in the charging circuit only.I never tried to upgrade
the software in a base that Lionel did not upgrade.
Only Lionel may know what changes were made in the hardware
and what software will work with what hardware.

Missed that. It was down near the bottom of a reply and I missed that.

The original Legacy had a setting on the chip set incorrectly. Once it was reset, as it was with all version that came with >1.0 version of the software or had a silver dot indicating the fix had been made, upgrades were never a problem
