I have a MTH RTR Set from 2002 (30-4085-0). The engine, 30-1244-1, is a UP 2-8-0 Cab #1757. When placed on the track it seems to spark slightly but when t does move it has scratchy sounds and stops and goes while trying to run. Somewhere on this forum years ago, I thought I saw where that could be the battery. Since it is 2002 I figured it was. I opened it very carefully and found NO Battery. So, I opened the Tender and discovered no battery there either. There is a Pot on the bottom of the tender to turn the volume down and a switch for smoke on or off. Is there or is there no a battery in this unit? If yes, Where? I figured this is a 5 volt board but can not see a charger port anywhere either. Another JD Diesel set from that era has a round charging port so I am totally confused. Any help would be appreciated.
