This topic is to honor the superstar modelers among us, of which I am not one, who have been published in OGRR Magazine ot similar magazine.

In order to be as inclusive as possible, if you have not been published yet, like me, you can mention a model train magazine article you really like, and explain why you like it.

The inspiration for this topic occurred the other night.

I'm a pack rat when it comes to saving OGRR and CTT magazines going back to 1989.

Sometimes I'll grab a few magazines for some light bedtime reading. I did that 2 nights ago.

One of the magazines was the Run 230 August/September issue of OGRR. That issue  included two articles written by Jim Policastro which, IMO. were beautifully written. Those articles were entitled Red Rock National Park about Jim's gorgeous Southwestern scenery of mountains and terrain in the State of Utah on his layout and how he made it; and A True Delight for the Senses about Don Klose's wonderful layout that includes models of past and present buildings in Schenectady, NY.

I know that Jim Policastro has had many articles published in model train magazines.

I look forward to reading the articles referenced on this thread. Arnold

Yes.

I did a product review on an electronic device for OGR many years ago (so long ago it was for Myron).

Roger Carp did a book called Lionel Display Layouts You can Build.  I contributed the dealer display blueprints for that book

Roger also wrote a book called The World's Greatest Toy Train Maker where he interviewed long retired Lionel employees about their experiences.  I contributed some information about some of these people.  I used to write Lionel as a kid and saved all of my reply letters.  Roger was able to use those to find the people he wrote about.  I corresponded with the Chief Engineer, Charlie Montagna, and later in life we were able to reconnect.  He recently passed at 93.  I found out later that one of his file folders contained all of my sketches and correspondence he saved from back in the 60's.

There was an article on Caption Kangaroo in CTT.  I wrote the Guest Editorial and drew up one of the custom layouts Lionel had done for the show.

In another issue of CTT there was an article on the 1957 Super O showroom layout.  I contributed the blueprint of the layout.

Not a superstar,

Lou N

Wrote article about my modular club in OGR run 320.

The timing was fortuitous.  The president of our club, who was one of the original designers and builders of the layout, had long dreamed of having the layout featured in one of the magazines.  I finally took the ball and ran with it in the middle of 2021.  A couple of weeks after he received the issue featuring our club's layout, he caught Covid and died a couple of weeks later.  Just a few days before he got sick, I was able to deliver a framed copy of the article to him.

I've never been skilled enough to contribute an article about my own modeling, but I'm really glad that I found the time to get the article done when I did.  It served as a reminder to do things now, while we can.

And thanks to @Allan Miller for his assistance with the process.

Thanks, Mallard4468, for sharing the above with us. It shows that one can get an article published even if one does not have a layout at the level usually required to get an article published.

In your case, it was an article you wrote about a club layout. I imagine you got permission from the club before you submitted it.

Everyone who has responded so far deserves great praise for your hard work and for promoting the magazine and hobby by writing and submitting the article(s). Bravo!

In my experience, it's not easy to get a model train-related article published. I've tried a couple of times without success, though I had fun writing them.

PS: Some of your contributions to the magazines are extraordinary IMO.

Several articles about Phil Klopp's magnificent past and present layouts. The oldest magazine I have (1988 or 1999) featured Phil's layout back then. I got that magazine when a LHS sold 100+ old magazines to me for $5.

Also articles years ago about Frank Sinatra's layout and Neil Young's layout.

I found the one about Neil Young's layout to be the most inspiring because it shows the highest and best use, IMO, for building and having a train layout. It involved the wonderful interaction with Neil and his son with the trains and layout.

Quite pleasurable to see how many of us have written articles for CTT and various other RR mags.

Back when Myron ran OGR, I sent in a piece of fiction I wrote called, "The Christmas of '56", loosely based on my love of Lionel as a 9 year-old during Christmas season.

To my surprise, it was published as the cover story in the December '93 issue. The cover of that ish was an artist concept of my story. The guys in my local train group weren't particularly impressed as they were just getting to know me. It never got better, lol...

Not just permission, but enthusiastic sharing of club history and help from another club member who is a skilled photographer (with due credit, of course).

Both of my current model railroads have been the subject of articles in OGR Magazine.

The first article, about my 12'-by-8' model railroad, appeared in OGR Run 214 (April/May 2006). An article about my 10'-by-5' model railroad was published in OGR Run 304 (February/March 2019) and the layout was also the subject of the cover photo for that issue.

I have also written several other articles for OGR Magazine, including one about my construction of a model of a New Haven Railroad signal station (control tower) in Run 307 (August/September 2019) and another about model railroad terrain construction in Run 316 (February/March 2021). An article about an O gauge module that I added to my 12’-by-8’ layout is scheduled for publication in OGR Magazine Run 327 (December/January 2022-2023).

I’ve also contributed photos of my layouts that appeared in OGR Magazine Readers Rails in Run 311 (April/May 2020) and Run 322 (February/March 2022).

My work has also appeared on line and in print in several other model railroad publications including a review of the Sunset/3rd Rail model of Boston & Maine GP7 #1562 in the September/October 2021 issue of Modelers Notes in the newsletter of the Boston & Maine Railroad Historical Society.

A photo that I took for OGR on my 12’-by-8’ layout also appears on the cover of the OGR print and digital book “21 Great Track Plans for Compact Layouts” by Ken Hoganson (see below and link). The sky, clouds and background trees were added to my photo by OGR.

Thanks to OGR editor Allan Miller and CEO Alan Arnold for having selected my articles and photos for publication.

A long time ago in a hobby far far away - slot car reviews!

I wrote and contributed a few reviews to HomeRacingWorld, all gratis of course but got some kits and cars.
It was nice to see my work online.  Received questions and compliments and had lots of fun!
I like to think I upped the sitesʻ game with my photography work, I was experimenting with lighting, lens and bokeh.

The routed wood track used for the reviews was fun to build, not unlike a Model RR layout.  It was 4x8 3/4" MDF with copper tape for conductors.
Track is long gone, but I still have the cars and enough Carrera plastic track for a sizable racing layout - I wish I had the room for a slot car track and Model RR layout.

I am the guy nobody seems to know.
My very first article in OGR was Run 255 showcasing my first layout. My layout was on the cover.

My new layout was featured in Runs 313 and 316. I made the cover for Runs 313 and 319. Subsequently, Allan publishes an article I write per magazine issue. I am part of the magazine’s “Section Gang”.

I also had articles in CTT and the TCA “Quarterly”. I lost count of the exact total.

Donald

Thank you, Arnold, for the kind words about two of my favorite articles in OGR.

Also, I owe Allan Miller a huge thank you for encouraging me to submit over two dozen of my articles that found their way into print in OGR magazine from Run 222 on.

I found that preparing articles about layout projects made me a better modeler. It forced me to break down each project into simple, easy-to-explain steps that could be photographed so others could understand.

Plus, it forced me to keep a neater workspace during the projects to allow for better photographs.

I really encourage others to give it a try themselves. Allan will work with you whether you are thinking about a full layout feature or a how-to article about some part of your layout.

You don't need a big, fancy layout or a complicated modeling project to be considered. In fact, most readers prefer small layout features and simpler construction projects that can be completed in a reasonable amount of time.

Allan is great to work with and will help you through the whole process.

Jim

Nothing in OGR but I've had several articles and photographs published in CTT.  I've had a few pictures and articles published in Trains and I've had a couple of articles and pictures and a number of covers for the Quarterly.  The first Quarterly cover was back in 2014. The first Quarterly cover with a railroad layout theme was October 2018 and the most recent cover is the current issue.

Jim, I look forward to meeting you in person someday, perhaps at York or in the Albany/Schenectady, NY area where we have mutual model railroader friends.

What I found about your articles that stands out is your writing style, including superb use of language. IMO, you are a very gifted writer.

I encourage others to read Jim's articles, especially those that aspire to have their articles published.

IMO, a great layout with great photos will go a long way to getting an article published, especially with the help of our gifted editors like Alan Miller. However, if you want to create a masterpiece of an article on your own that needs little, if any, editing, the use of language is equally important, IMO.

I find that whenever I read anything, writing style, more than anything, is what gets me hooked.

Arnold

I just remembered, I have been published. However, it wasn't a model railroad related article.

Besides having several law related articles published in bar association journals over the years (please don't bother reading them unless you, or someone you care about, has a divorce situation in NY), the TCA published an article I wrote about my model railroad video/song, Who AM I (Rollin' By), in their TCA e-newsletter in 2017 or 2018.

You can access the video/song on YouTube by typing my name, Arnold Cribari, in the YouTube search box, looking for the video/song and clicking on it. Most of the video shows Phil Klopp's magnificent layout. Arnold

Hi Arnold, really thoughtful thread,  and thanks everyone for the articles that you all have written!  I too enjoy reading back issues of CTT, OGR, and Model Railroader.  I have old issues stored in my train room, and in crates that are in my garage.  Both CTT and OGR make their back issues available on line, so from time to time i  browse through them as well as Model Railroader and Trains. Much more interesting and productive than watching some lame TV show.  Basically, the articles you have written live on and continue to be enjoyed.

I find that they are a great resource.
