Take your trains under the layout with you so they don't blow away!

When a tornado clobbered a nearby town in 1974, in which a former supervisor lived, his wife rode it out in the bathtub, with the rest of the house collapsing around the bathroom, which I am guessing the plumbing helps to anchor.  That house was on a

slab, with no basement.  Either the news is better, or we are getting a heck of a lot

more of them....I only remember one when I was a kid.

 

With some of the layouts I've seen on here with 4x4 legs and 2x6 framework and 3/4" tops I guess you could take shelter under them.

After seeing some damage pics from recent twisters I'm beginning to think the safest shelter (in lieu of a basement or train table) is inside your washer or dryer. Houses are blown to smithereens, yet the washer and dryer still sit there side by side.   

Are you ok? Hopefully, it missed you or never happened. It can be an instant life changer or life ender.

If you should need to seek shelter the bathroom is recommended.

I guess that helps me to stay CALM...

It blew nort of us.My wife had our animals under there with us.I put my big boy under there also lol.

I'm glad to hear that all is well and that you are not posting from Oz. 

Good advice, Nick, Most of us who have built benchwork have made it very sturdy. Basements plus going under the benchwork would be a very good idea.

 

Nice to know you took care of your pets as well. They are part of the family.

When sheltering under your layout, you may find it best to avoid sheltering under any tornado magnets trailer parks that you have modeled. 

Umm, looking around York, I'm pretty sure that most train guys would not fit . . .

Nick what else did you bring with you underneath the layout besides the big boy?

I would have brought my computer under the layout to keep abreast of what was going on in the OGR forum.

I thought Nicole was across the pond, but she is familiar with trailer parks as tornado

targets in this country?  That was  where I first saw damage from one as a kid.  This

was in a small town about twenty miles out of the city.  Everybody then treated it like

it had happened in North Borneo....as a adult, I think that was too dang close.

Well, yes... if the above is true you should head for the bathroom.

Built my layout strong enough to walk on for two people, good place to hide. My racing rig has a computer as the brains and it's tied into my DCS system so we can watch the weather while we drink a couple (wet bar next to the layout).

ya, we got roughed up a little bit here in western medina county too. we  have a train table with 2x6s, 3/4" plywood[ made on purpose] under the stairs in the basement.i always told the family to take cover under that table if it got nasty.its about the most secure spot in the house.

Having just done some work on both a washer and dryer (new hoses and vent), I think

you might get a cat under the washer, but this slob will not fit.  Dunno if zoning would let me build a shelter in the back yard.  With tornados the last several years in Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City, and somewhere in northern California, I don't know who is exempt anymore.
