Under Santa's watchful eyes, the crew finally was able to place the multi-colored lights on the Christmas Tree. This tree is a D56 product from many years ago and came with blinking red lights. Adding the multi-colored lights to it makes it really POP. We had hoped that it would grab your attention and it really does. The lights also came in for the tree pedestal, so the crew installed them as well.

What's left for this project is to install some additional elves. We thought that 200 was enough for our Center of the North Pole, but alas, not enough to get the coverage we want.

From this project, I think we have accomplished a couple of firsts. We may have set a record for lights per square foot on an O-Gauge layout, and with over 550 elves on the layout, this may also be a first.

Our goal when starting this project this past January was to finish it by May 1st. Looks like we will meet our target.

Hope you like the photo.

Brian - Your layout looks fantastic!  I'm guessing that the pictures don't do it justice either.  It will be forever Christmas on your layout.  Finishing it by May 1st will assure that the magazines and video makers will have ample time to feature it for next year's season.  Great job!

"I really like it, and I've become somewhat obsessed with Christmas the last few months, but why have a Christmas layout built in May, if I may ask? Like I said, I love it, but I fear I'd be sick of it by December."

The motivation behind this layout was to have a suitable layout to run both versions of the scale Polar Express Lionel trains, The Gold Edition and the Black engine with the blue/maroon coaches. We built it in a room located on the first level of our home that does not get much normal daily traffic. During much of the year, we go through this room only to get to our boat.

For us, the best time to take on a project like this was during the winter months. We get busy as soon as the ice drops in the lake and right up through late fall. For us to start this project in October and have it done to enjoy during the Christmas season would have been impossible. As it is, this took us nearly four months to complete with many long days involved.

Our plans are to have another OGR Forum Open House this summer and we also wanted to have it completed for this event. So starting it in January and completing it now makes complete sense, at least to us. And no, no chance we will get tired of it, now or by December.

I'm reading the whole thread now, I had thought initially by the thread title this was going to just be a REALLY nice temporary setup (like many other member Christmas displays). I didn't realize it was permanent, though was thinking it should be. Makes a lot more sense, now.

Brian and Elizabeth,

This is certainly a wonderful layout to display your PE locomotives and passenger cars.  Another ORG open house!  Hmm...I wonder how long a trip it is from Western Pennsylvania to Maine....

The Polar Express is what brought me into the hobby and where most of my train focus remains today.  This layout will just have to be seen in person in order to fully enjoy.  I cannot wait to see more pictures and/or video going over all of the details.  The lighting alone just makes this layout so beautiful.

I hope you can relax now over the summer with a sense of satisfaction and impending excitement of the fall and winter season to come with this beautiful layout.  Just outstanding.
