I know I have seen this here before, but I can't remember the answer. Range should be 30 to 50% for humans, but how about trains? Will they be good at 40%?

They will be fine at 40%, but for human comfort I prefer 50%-60%. It's high humidity (70-or-so-and-up) that can lead to potential problems for trains and their innards.
40% for trains is excellent. In the summer if you can keep it under 50% you are doing well.

I'm at 60-65% here in Houston in the summer. My layout is in the garage...been there for the past 5 years and no problems. I have a 2 1/2 x2 1/2 foot exhaust fan in the garage ceiling that vents to the outside. I run the fan in the evening to pull out some of the hot air and humidity...it works.
is a MYTH.
I am living in east FLA my layout is in the garage with no AC and high humidity during summer time and so far no rust at all. Maybe because i keep 'em running??

I live in Colorado, it's always around 20-25%.
When mine hit 70% humidity rust problems started. Bought a dehumidifier and got it down to 47% which resolved the issues. Hooked the drain hose up to sump pump and ended the hassles of dumping the water bin.
I'm with the majority, I have no problems with a dehumidifier keeping the basement at 50-55%.
Depending on how much the dehumidifier is running, anywhere from 20 - 35%. That also depends on how often I empty the bin!
55% works for my trains, my guitar, my electronics and my comfort...year round.
60% in my basement, except 50-55% when the furnace is running in winter. The trains do fine.
