The Base 3 will Include a black module. All you need to do is transfer the entire data base of engines to the Base 3. No issues at all.

Let me see if I snapped a few shots of the back of the unit. If so, I will post them. Rest assure, your covered.

Regards,

Kevin

Thank you KEVIN!!!  Sounds like an easy fix.  Looking forward to getting this unit.

You'll also be able to save and restore the Base 3 database to the app and we haven't talked about it but they'll be a Windows app also that can do what the phone app can do.

That makes sense.  I can't recall how big the database is for Legacy but multiple ways of transferring and or saving it is a plus.

When the Base 3s were first announced, a few of us asked if there was a way to interface a TMCC base so Cab1s could be used. Dave Olsen thought there might be a way using one of the LCS inputs.
Did this question come up during this Beta Test?

Our club still has a many members who run trains with a Cab1 so the decision to buy a Base 3 will depend in this capability.

In one of Dave's "Demos with Dave" I'm pretty sure he said he tried it and worked.

Which is another great option. And while I suppose 'compatibility' can't be guaranteed, a Mac from the last 2-3 years with Apple's processor can typically run any iPhone/iPad app, too. So in theory, the app should function from newer MacBooks, etc. as well should anyone find that useful.

I’m actually pretty bummed about the CAB-1 situation. Kinda wonder why it was left behind other than it talking on a different frequency or whatever. I am very fond of the old CAB-1 so hopefully  the app is something more than a remote emulator and will be fun to use to help dry my tears.

I might be wrong so I hope my members will correct but pretty sure the base 1 can be connected via the cable just as you do with the 990 and use the cab 1 in old TMCC mode

Disregard.  Quoted the wrong post.

Ben, it doesn’t have a 9 pin RS232 connector (DB9). It does have a USB A and three LCS connectors. If a Command Base can be interfaced it would have to go to one of those connectors. Hopefully cables or instructions on how to make one will be included in the instructions.

Not for the app tho. The app would (in theory) run the same, over WiFi or BT (whatever it uses), same as it does on an iPhone etc.

Whoops quoted the wrong post.  Disregard that.

You would need a SER2 connected via the PDI ports as there are no serial ports on the Base 3 unless that has changed.

Did Dave get asked (and answer) the $64K question during his visit: “When is it hitting store shelves?”

We asked that MANY times and:

  • (NJ Hi-Railers) "When will you make an end?"
  • (Dave) "When I am finished."

Actually he said they are making good progress but couldn't commit to us on a date.  He's committed to it being the highest quality and function possible. out of the gate. Ergo, the beta testing.  Sounds like he's in the home stretch!

Well, they did keep the CAB1L in production, so you have that functionality.  Of course, it's blue and no antenna for the sword fights around the layout, so it's not exactly the same...

Thanks Ben! GRJ, I could understand them just wanting to supporting current production remotes. I can’t remember when the CAB-1 production ended. Maybe they’ll support the serial comm to the Base-1 with one of the Base-3 ports and an adapter cable. Maybe they can do it without the need for the SER-2. I don’t have any of that stuff hooked up.

Man, all this info coming out is great. You have to love(or like) how the right questions were asked, which is definitely necessary and I'm sure Dave was happy to answer them, as well as get new questions to field. All the negative Nancy things can go by the wayside, this is proving to be one of the best and insightful topics about the Base 3. It has me buzzing, and I am not ordering one(at this time). Maybe some other clubs can message Dave to see if he can make a trip out to their set up for more field testing after he is done making updates/changes after this. That would be wicked.

I have the CAB1L base and Remote. But surprisingly I only use the CAB1L when I'm problem solving Lionel engines and performing engine specific settings.

I would guess I use the TIU/Remote 95% of the time for the actual running of Lionel and MTH engines. I guess I do that because the MTH system controls all of my engines.

I probably missed the following question in prior conversations; but is Lionel's CAB3 going to use the same interface with the MTH TIU as CAB1L? In other words, would the CAB3 be a drop-in replacement for the CAB1L base?

If your DCS is connected directly to the Base1L serial port, you will need to get a SER2 via the PDI ports to connect DCS to .  Confirmed by @Chris Lord there is no serial port on the Base3.

Hey @MartyE...

Yep, the CAB1L base is connected to the TIU via a serial cable.

I do however have a TIU Rev L in storage as a backup; which I believe has a USB interface (it's been quite a while since I looked at it). If I swapped my current Rev I TIU with the Rev L; would I still require the SER2 cable?

@Dave Olson would have to address that.  The last he mentioned on a Demos with Dave is it would be via the SER2.  Whether the USB has this ability is something he would need to answer.

You might want to think about ordering one.  Dave said the pre-orders exceeded all expectations and they are getting close to selling out the first run.

I use a Base2 with 2 TPC's to control track voltage. I am not real confident with the connection labels, but I think I use a serial connection on the Base2 to control my TPC's. Do I understand correctly that when I get my Base3 I will need to use a different cable and a SER2 device to connect my TPC's?

I'll be off the grid for a couple days, so I won't be able respond quickly with a "thank you" for clearing this up.  Thanks.
