OK I haven't seen any recent stories about this, so here goes. I just purchased a 1999 Rdg. Crusader set still new in the box. It came with all the accessories etc. Some one had the foresight to replace the original NiCad battery with a nimh 150 mah battery. Of course it was very dead. I fired the engine and tender up on my test track and let it sit at half throttle for a while. The steam idle sounds were on the whole time. When I tried the whistle and bell, they worked (ONCE). Never again. That was the end of them. I installed a new fully charged low self discharge 9 volt battery, but still nothing. I get a slow chug sound while running around my layout at any speed, which will go back to idle sounds when I stop the engine.  Are there any sound units out there that will replace the steam chug and bell/ whistle? I am not sure, but the engine E unit might be tied in with everything else. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would call ERR. You usually speak with Ken. If you don't have a lot invested in the train, it may be worth getting the newer version of the cruise commander with the railsounds board and upgrading the whole system. Big improvement.

Are you trying to run it in command or conventional mode? The battery is only for idle and shut down sounds when you run it conventionally.

A standard reset code via tmcc\legacy may resolve the issues. Do you have the manual?

Have you tried replacing the battery with an original style battery? Sometimes but not always the original style and volt battery will make it work properly.

I have the K-Line 15 Crusader cars with an MTH engine with PS-1. If the engine's electronics fail I might go with a Williams True Blast Plus sound system and a bridge rectifier for direction control as I don't use the reverse mode any.

FYI, I know about Boscov's department stores as I used to go to the one in north Reading PA(Reading Fairgrounds in Muhlenberg Township) as a teenager.

Our house was near the Reading railroad when I was growing up. so, when I saw this photo and read about this cool looking train I finally found one ebay new in the box.

And its unusual because it has a "headend" car that's just like the observation car but behind the tender. That way only the locomotive and tender could be uncoupled and attached to the other end.  It made it a lot easier for short turnarounds and keep on schedule.

John, what were all the updates and conversions you did on hafner 33's Crusader? Did you also make any changes to the cars?

BTW, is this the same make/model of Rdg. Crusader you ran for the North Penn O Gaugers display at the 2014 TCA National Convention in Philly?

The Reading Crusader that ran at the TCA convention was the scale version from Weaver.

Thanks for the reply, John. I'm interested in eventually obtaining a Crusader and since you've handled and experienced both, which would you suggest I seek, the one by K-Line or the one by Weaver (and why)?

BTW, did you do upgrades to that Weaver you ran at the convention?

Hi again, I just ordered a sound set from ERR which I will install in my K-Line Crusader engine. I only run conventional, so I am really not interested in TMCC or anything like that. I used to run H.O. on the RCT&HS layouts until they went to remote control. It just got too complicated for this old brain to keep up with.  Thanks to all of you for your input, it is much appreciated.
