OK I haven't seen any recent stories about this, so here goes. I just purchased a 1999 Rdg. Crusader set still new in the box. It came with all the accessories etc. Some one had the foresight to replace the original NiCad battery with a nimh 150 mah battery. Of course it was very dead. I fired the engine and tender up on my test track and let it sit at half throttle for a while. The steam idle sounds were on the whole time. When I tried the whistle and bell, they worked (ONCE). Never again. That was the end of them. I installed a new fully charged low self discharge 9 volt battery, but still nothing. I get a slow chug sound while running around my layout at any speed, which will go back to idle sounds when I stop the engine. Are there any sound units out there that will replace the steam chug and bell/ whistle? I am not sure, but the engine E unit might be tied in with everything else. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

They can be replaced with ERR's boards.
This book Modern Toy Train Repair discusses this on page 107. Al though, it was written when K-Line was still in business, using TMCC and RailSounds licensed from Lionel.
It's a very nice semi-scale train.
There's a few guys on the forum that can repair it or call err
Thanks for your input Moonman, I went to the ERR site and really liked the medium steam sounds that they made. I e-mailed them and gave them the information on my train. So lets see what they have to say. Thanks again.
I would call ERR. You usually speak with Ken. If you don't have a lot invested in the train, it may be worth getting the newer version of the cruise commander with the railsounds board and upgrading the whole system. Big improvement.
Are you trying to run it in command or conventional mode? The battery is only for idle and shut down sounds when you run it conventionally.
A standard reset code via tmcc\legacy may resolve the issues. Do you have the manual?
Have you tried replacing the battery with an original style battery? Sometimes but not always the original style and volt battery will make it work properly.
I have the K-Line 15 Crusader cars with an MTH engine with PS-1. If the engine's electronics fail I might go with a Williams True Blast Plus sound system and a bridge rectifier for direction control as I don't use the reverse mode any.

Thanks for the instructions on the Reading Crusader. I purchased my passenger cars used and not new so I just printed a copy of the instructions.
FYI, I know about Boscov's department stores as I used to go to the one in north Reading PA(Reading Fairgrounds in Muhlenberg Township) as a teenager.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe that set had a command control system. So why use a battery?
I have the set and had it upgraded to PS 2.0 by Eric Hofman. A neat, unique set.

The battery was used so the sound system didn't reset every time you changed direction.
I've upgraded a couple of them to command, sound, and fan driven smoke. They are a sharp looking set, and deserve to get a nice upgrade.
Our house was near the Reading railroad when I was growing up. so, when I saw this photo and read about this cool looking train I finally found one ebay new in the box.
And its unusual because it has a "headend" car that's just like the observation car but behind the tender. That way only the locomotive and tender could be uncoupled and attached to the other end. It made it a lot easier for short turnarounds and keep on schedule.
What happened to the smoke? It smoked a lot more than that when it left here.
As soon as I posted it I realized the smoke was off . John's going to call me on that.Have to do one with full smoke on.
You betcha'! After all the work to get great smoke, I want to see that sucker looking like it's on fire!

John, what were all the updates and conversions you did on hafner 33's Crusader? Did you also make any changes to the cars?
BTW, is this the same make/model of Rdg. Crusader you ran for the North Penn O Gaugers display at the 2014 TCA National Convention in Philly?
I only got the locomotive in this case, it got TMCC/Railsounds, 4-chuffs, an MTH smoke unit, the Super-Chuffer, and LED lights all around.
The Reading Crusader that ran at the TCA convention was the scale version from Weaver.

Thanks for the reply, John. I'm interested in eventually obtaining a Crusader and since you've handled and experienced both, which would you suggest I seek, the one by K-Line or the one by Weaver (and why)?
BTW, did you do upgrades to that Weaver you ran at the convention?
Harry Henning III did the Weaver Crusader upgrade. I'd get either, they're both really good looking units. The K-Line is semi-scale, but still very good looking. The Weaver scale cars didn't have interiors, Harry is in the process of adding interiors to those.
Hi again, I just ordered a sound set from ERR which I will install in my K-Line Crusader engine. I only run conventional, so I am really not interested in TMCC or anything like that. I used to run H.O. on the RCT&HS layouts until they went to remote control. It just got too complicated for this old brain to keep up with. Thanks to all of you for your input, it is much appreciated.
That looks more like the one I sent out!
Looking good!
