We all enjoy seeing bridges and/or trestles on layouts and having them on our own train layout. They do take up a certain amount of dedicated space. And sometimes, we are only able to accomplish just-so-much with our own hands when it comes to having bridges on a layout, whether it's installing commercially made bridges or scratch-building our own.

What have you been able to accomplish in having bridges on a layout? Were you determined, right from the start, to have at least one bridge and made certain you dedicated proper space for it?

This ensemble of bridges shown here, on my layout, were planned for before the platform in this section IMG_0508mwas even constructed.

Sharing ideas and experiences is a good thing, IMHO.

All:  Some great shots of the bridges and trestles, some real nice work!!!!!

Gregg and Aubv:  You both have some real nice bridges integrated into your layouts!

Gregg; That Bascule bridge is it simply one you raise by hand or is it functional via a motor?

Aubv: Your long viaduct spanning the valley (similar to the Tunkhannock Creek Viaduct in Pennsylvania) is stunning along with the one that is lit against a wall.  Did you fabricate these parts and if so from what and how?

It is my model(Masonite) of the real Nicholson bridge(Tunkhannock viaduct) I worked from this picture.image

this picture shows the 1/2 arch on the right side, as it transitions into the hill side.

The 16 arch bridge 8' in length, came about when this section of a layout was rebuilt. It is built with 5/4 pine, plywood and Masonite, a table saw and chop saw. The railings are by  Crow River.image

Excellent work on the Nicholson Viaduct. I also like the steel trestle.

I've been across the viaduct on a Steamtown excursion, probably one of the first in fact. It never ceases to amaze me.

Frank...this is a fantastic thread...thanks for starting it.  I recently posted a few videos of that show trips on various lines on the layout.  They are all on my YouTube channel so if you click on the YouTube logo in the lower right hand area of the video, it will take you to the channel where you can then increase the screen to full size in 1080p.  I think these show most of the bridges and how I use them on the layout.

Thanks,

Alan

Too late. I'm a bridge troll and have another bridge project planned (but no place to put it). This is the Torrance Pacific Electric Bridge (which is part of the City seal). They sent out a request for bids a few years ago to restore/retrofit the bridge. With the solicitation came some very good drawings w/measurements.

Here's a rendering of the bridge core on a module.

Then there's the UP Santa Ana River Viaduct. At 900 feet long the O scale model would be 18 feet 9 inches long (obviously would have to go outdoors). I got the drawings from a guy who built one in N scale from foam and resin castings.

Awlawdee, you see a bridge among this thread, and you decide it's the best it could ever get. Then, you see the next posting and BOOM! Another interesting masterpiece!

("If I had to pick just one," I couldn't! )

When I started this topic, I knew we'd see plenty of interesting ideas executed well, but I truly had no...   4922

..idea it would get so enjoyable and interesting. There is a huge amount of creativity and fun going on out there in Hobby-land.

Got more? I do. Here are a few more shots from me, which I am almost reluctant to show considering how cool everything is we've seen here so far (!)

Moonson,

I like your use of people, I did a similar scene when I just finished my bridges. I used one for the Christmas layout, and had a ladder, saw horses and some carpenters working on the damaged deck and burned bridge post. I'll be ****ed if I can find the carpenters or ladder and horses. At least I found my mini cam, so now I can do a decent video on the suspended layout.

I have a photo, but I can't find that either!

Thank you, RAIL. I much appreciate your kindness in taking the time to say so. And you have an interesting idea there I may try myself sometime.

Presently, however, this is as close as I have gotten to having men working with saws and using a saw horse. (I'm not sure you will be able to discern all that in this "aerial" photo, though.)sheded
