I have a Burlington Northern Bicentennial LEGACY U30C Diesel #1776 SKU: 6-38417. Recently I developed a smoke unit problem. When I turn the smoke unit on it seems to come on and then I go into the self diagnostic problem mode, and the cab light is blinking 3 times. The manual states that this could be a smoke 1 fan problem, and it must be returned to Lionel for repair. Has anyone had this problem, and can anyone advise how I might fix this on my own? Could it be a simple one drop lubrication to the fan motor shaft problem? Thanks, Brian

Bad smoke motor .. If your good fixing stuff it's not a hard job.. When most of these where made they had a bunch of bad smoke motors .. Also can do a mth motor if you want .. I think the new Lionel motors are fine ..
Thanks for your quick reply. So its probably just the DC motor? Nothing else I should order?
That's all you need .. Might want to consider buying the bell by the gas tank chances are you will damage it removing it .. That bell has to be removed to take off the shell.
I believe JOJOFRY is correct on the diagnosis. I had the same thing happen to me a year or so ago, only on a different model Legacy engine and a new smoke fan motor fixed it right up. It was very easy to replace and only took a few minutes. Sounds like my shell came off a little easier though, nothing was in the way of removing it.
I used an MTH motor that I had on hand that just happened to fit. The motor body was identical, but the shaft was a little shorter on the MTH motor. Anyway, it worked great, no more cab blinks and it's still working just fine today (last Sunday anyway).
Classic issue, there was a batch of bad smoke motors in that timeframe. I've already replaced a bunch of that time period smoke motors with MTH motors.
For those that used the MTH fan motors, what would the part # be?
BE-0000041 is the standard motor.
