FINALLY!  Finally my steel company yard goat arrived which MTH released in mid-June.

As much as possible I support the local toy train shop!  When this was cataloged in the 2019 V1 when to Local toy train shop to order.  In front of me they called MTH to order.  But was told the MTH's ( Mike Wolf's) policy was only case load quantities.  Which in this would have been two engines.  Now I bet no one within 100-miles knows of this company or anyone within 200-miles (like myself) has actually been inside a full fledge steel mill.  So they would have been stuck with the second engine.  they shop ordered it from one of MTH's largest distributors which is another story in itself.

I was born, raised and matured in the second largest producer of steel in the country.  The Youngstown Steel and Tube was founded there in 1900.  Also the Republic Steel company was founded there a year or two earlier.

Anyway my home town steel company yard goat.

Another Carolina Craftsman Kit floated in.  This of the "Frog Pond" store.  This is similar to a couple of other store and feed mill kits out there.  Because of this structure's shape, l am considering bashing into a water mill with store,  and attached grain elevator.  I do like these kits, and country stores, mills, elevators, stamp mills, and "different" RR stations.

I missed this reefer when Atlas"O" released it in their Masterline reefer series years ago, so I decided the next best thing was the same reefer that S-Helper Service issued in their "S" gauge line a few years prior to them retiring and going out of business. Too bad MTH hasn't done their best to keep these wonderful models alive.....

The only change from "stock' is a set of Kadee couplers (#802).IMG_2287IMG_2288

Harry Hieke had this in YORK last fall

He has sold the display unit, but said he would make me a new one

Just received from him last week through Fed Ex

Great detail and a beautiful addition, BUT the real kicker is the fact that it was sent through the mail and arrived in perfect condition

I have never seen a better packing job for a very fragile product

Thank you Harry

Badly-worded statement, Folks.  I will use the entire 8.8 cubic foot elevated switchyard on my lay-out. The other half consists of tracks, various bridge structures, and a few toy railcars, none of which I  want. I spent some time with a tape measure this afternoon and have already disassembled one structure to make room.

It's why I like flat cars and gondolas. They give us the opportunity to improve them the way we want.

The items I ordered from Nicholas Smith Trains during their "Tent Blowout Sale" have finally arrived. I mainly got the Lionel SD60E so I have something to operate with my Lionel Southern ES44AC. The Lionel Trackmobile I purchased because I have always wanted one since they are so small but rather mighty. So far I'm loving both engines, but I like the Trackmobile a lot more because of how unique it is. I can't wait to try both of these out at the San Diego 3-Railers in a few weeks. It will be interesting seeing visitors reactions to my Trackmobile pulling a few freight cars.

Both models are running perfectly by the way! The SD60E has a rather noisy smoke fan motor, but I will fix that later.

I've been putting together a collection of pw 2000 series steam engines. Last week I was surfing the bay for pw 2026 w/tenders. Found a seller selling separately two 2026 (one of each variations) and had two more separate auctions selling a tender for each engine. I found another seller selling a 2026 w/two matching tenders in one auction. Crunched numbers and realized buying the 2026 w/two tenders and one 2026 engine from the other auction would be cheaper. Then decided to buy a 2020 turbine w/tender and also found a 671 w/tender and w/ three freight cars and caboose at a good price.

All four engine runs great, two tenders works great, the other two tenders after rewiring works great.

My parents had a '73 Satellite with a 318 Mark. I used to love driving it because it looked just like the unmarked cars the County PD used.

PS- I did use all of the available horsepower from time to time.

Very nice looking model Lou. Should look great with lights added.

I like flat cars to you can put what ever you want.I like putting on oddball loads like heavy machines. Some time you might see inside a big factory.

I saw this announced on an NYC Facebook Group I follow, and since I road the Harlem Line for a few years before I retired, I knew I had to order a copy (I got mine from Amazon). The book begins with some general history and then follows the general format of “chapters” covering a trip from GCT to Chatham, NY. Most of the copious photos are in black and white, but there are some great color shots as well.

Three interesting things I’ve learned so far is that there used to be a turntable and roundhouse at North White Plains (where I passed through many times), the old station at Katonah is definitely now a restaurant that I have eaten in, and that the NYC met the Rutland at Chatham and that is where the famous milk train began!!!

The book is a bit pricey at $64.95, but I think it is well worth the cost.

Love my 60E! I have NS 911 as it holds a very special place in my heart. Soon I hope to have a model in O (first I got; Loniel), HO (second, Athearn Genesis) and soon to be N scale (Atlas) Be weary with the details, as the NS designed split cooling system had its glue loose adhesion. The parts aren’t glued on too well.

Went to the Hamburg meet this past Sunday. Bought some nice looking Lionel pw 400 and 404 Budd cars at a decent price. The dealer who sold me the 400  said it runs perfect (yea.... checks in the mail) . First thing I did as usual when I got them home was take them a part to check out the electrical, clean the grease out, re-grease and oil them. The 400 had two wires off the motor and the 404 had one wire off the motor, at the price I paid for both, no biggie. After doing the maintenance they now run like new.

I saw an ad for a local estate sale that said "Lionel trains", so I figured I would check it out. It was mostly MPC stuff but they had a 6-28036 Southern Pacific Consolidation NIB. I bought that, as I have been looking for either a scale SP Consolidation or Mikado. I model the AT&SF with a bit of SP mixed in, so this fit perfectly. I got it really cheap. Out of the box the smoke unit didn't work. Turns out, after some testing, the triac on the R2LC was damaged from the factory. I had a spare R4LC so I swapped that in and it works great.

The smoke output is anemic vs my other steam locomotives (all MTH Premier), but that's to be expected from a puffer unit. The 1 chuff a revolution is a bit bothersome as well. I can see this locomotive getting either a fan driven smoke unit, Cruise Commander, super chuffer, chuff generator combo or a PS3 upgrade at some point.

Trussman,

Glad that you found the problem easily, the two issues you found are quite common and easily fixed, almost a fun project. It is a good idea to open and at least lube used train purchases prior to use anyway.

I always avail myself of the test tracks at shows. If the item works, great. If not, time to negotiate if post or pre-war (as these are easily fixed and parts are available.

If modern and not working, I'd look for another if you want all of the advertised functions

Another preorder came in. Lionel REA baggage car. I'm going to use it at the end of my Fast Mail Express train, since it has rear marker lights. Between this, the SP Consolidation, and the freight sounds refrigerator that came in a few weeks ago my train budget is tapped till next year, especially with the holidays coming up in a few months.

yes Paul- a Command and a DCS system are in my future. probably get the Cab-1 first since I have more Lionel engines.

LOU1985, wow, beautiful RPO Railway Express Car, wondering which Lionel catalog this was pictured in? It’s nice, and has the marker lights. I have the Louisville & Nashville RPO baggage car but it doesn’t have the marker lights, but under the car description, it Indicated it would have the marker lights. My car is pictured in the 2018 Lionel Catalog, page 44. There is a place under the car saying on and off switch. Just curious.

RSJB, Bob, that’s a hum dinger of a beautiful diesel, D&H Blue/Silver, and your going to enjoy moving it around your layout with a Cab 1/Cab 1L/ Cab 2....Enjoy.

RJT-Rick, all I can say is that’s a cool catch, post war engines that look so good. Thanks for the pictures...

The REA Baggage car (not a RPO like your car) was in the 2019 V1. I wasn't planning on running it at the rear of the train but with it having rear marker lights it's easier to do that then add them to the Atlas Santa Fe  combine that originally was the last car.

I thought only the baggage cars came with rear lights and the RPOs didn't  but I could be wrong.

Not trying to push you down the slippery slope (you are obviously doing fine without help!!!), but I have found the Legacy controller much more intuitive than the Cab 1 - plus, Lionel still seems to honor the warranty regardless of the age of the set (smoke fluid baths are excluded).

I don't think I ever used the test track at a meet. If the cosmetics looks good and the motor feels right when I spin the wheels, I'll feel comfortable about purchasing the engine. When I get a pw engine home I usually take them apart, I'll go over the wiring, clean the commutator, clean the brushes and holders, clean out the old grease, re-grease and oil everything. When it comes to oiling parts, I'm a little unconventional, I use Harley 60 wt oil. :-)

Nothing new lately, no.  Although I am usually a year-round railroader, this summer has been so busy for me that I haven't had much free time to devote to the layout.  I never would have believed that retirement could be so busy!

Looking forward to the next train show, in November.  So maybe there'll be something for me to post, then.

Here's a different answer never given before on this thread.

Nothing! What I have bought that is cool lately is Nothing. And, that is cool, IMO, because I am a little less broke as a result.

Instead, what I have done lately is play with what I have, take photos and videos and post them on this Forum, read OGR Magazine when it comes in the mail, and that is cool because I am happy doing that.

LOL, Arnold

PS: If you are happy buying stuff lately, that is cool. I will buy again too, down the road, and, of course, that will be cool.

Had no postwar steam engine, Say What?

All postwar  diesels and electrics I have ever wanted.

So, now in the past couple of weeks the boxes arrived.

2020, 736, 2055.

With this occurance I have been cleaning, lubing , replacing some parts, repairs,  now all the tenders whistle, and the engines run as they should! Went through a box of Cuetips and such. This took me to new heights and naturally a time machine adventure! WOW. Let the ozone fill the air! Lol.

I had these locos in my   past but missed them enough.

Currently at work (again)photos not available.

Hi. Guys

I ordered from Trainworld a while ago on back order A Lionel MoW kitchen wagon with sounds.

The first time I put it on the tracks, my grandson started to laugh, I asked him what he was laughing at, it soon apparent from the dialogue, after listen more carefully, the dialogue went something like "That's the best Weiner I have ever seen," and later a sound like someone passing wind, but because my hearing is not what it should I missed it the first time round.

I finally did it, I picked up my first MTH Protosound 3.0 engine. This Tri-Rail F40PH. I saw this on eBay for a pretty good price and the seller sent a special offer that dropped the price to around 285 dollars, plus 31 dollars shipping. I got this for around 317 dollars in the end and it arrived home in 2 business days.

It runs great and sound great as well. I had to take the shell off to push the strobe light all the way up, since it was pushed down into the shell more than it should have been. But that's fixed now and it looks perfect.

I got a 4 pack of matching Bombardier passenger cars coming at the end of the week as well. I can't wait to pull them behind this little beast.IMG_1257

Here's my MTH Tri-Rail with the 4 pack of passenger cars I got. I didn't get a chance to take pictures yesterday because one of the cars had a stiff truck that I needed to fix and later one of the passenger cars had 2 LEDs stop working. The LED problem appears to be bad solder joints, so I might try to fix them myself.
I tested the engine and cars at my local club in DCS mode and everything worked perfectly. I also tested all of the functions of the engine, all worked perfectly.

Bill- there's an adapter for prewar to post war knuckle coupler . I have one but it doesn't work well.

This is just another tank car to everyone but me. I used to spot tanks just like this RailKing model at the refinery in Cyril, OK. while working the train we called the Fletcher Turn.
This is one of a few examples 88C1B860-B8B6-4490-8B4C-5192D1837ADE60774463-8F1F-4677-9F9E-42116D2A27CDof how the MTH RailKing model is far superior to its Premier line equivalent. The Premier ethyl tanks look strange and way out of proportion.  The Lionel version is close to accurate but lacks the dome handrailing.
I wish I had a small set of scales so I could weigh this car...it feels like it weighs 2+ pounds.

In June, when my wife and I went to Durango to ride the Durango and Silverton the following day, my wife and some others on the tour went to dinner and I went to photo some trains, as they were still coming in and everything at the depot was still open for a couple of hours.

20190604180230_IMG_5161

I looked around the gift shop after taking the photo above of 473, and bought a few things but I really wanted one of these jackets. I have enough jackets, but they’re almost all military or space related and I wanted something RR that didn’t look cheesy. This fit the bill and it was fleece-lined and had a detachable hood. It wasn’t too much, either. But as always we packed very tightly (my wife is never happy unless the suitcase is packed very tight and has no excess room, for some reason I’ve never understood). Anyway, it’d never fit in the suitcase going home. I even took a photo of it in case I ever decided to call them after we got back, to order one.

72185

It nagged at me ever since that evening and when the summer was ending I thought, “Why not?” and called them to have one ordered. They were very nice and shipped one and I got it yesterday. I’m looking forward to wearing it as it's supposed to be getting cooler very soon!

I found a Century Club Green GG-1 2332 on Ebay, EX+ with no box but o/w fine for $170. To me, a great price.

However, one electrocoupler snapped off during shipping, so now it is in for repair at my local service center. I suspect it will need an entire truck assembly, so there goes the “great” deal.

The  seller is kindly working with me on a price adjustment, so I’m hoping the deal stays at least “very good” if not fantastic. Beautiful engine.

i have the modern era black model 2332 and 2360 tuscan solid stripe, so I couldn’t see spending much for this third one. They are going for around $350-400 new.

The old Farmers Almanac says it’s going to be milder than normal.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Oh Boy, Mike, is your memory short!  You don’t recall the email or two we had a year or so ago?

I live about 20 minutes or so south of Hoodsport just outside of Shelton.

I went to a show in Newark, DE today and ended up getting a 312 AF passenger set. It runs great and has the smoke in tender feature. Its my first really nice AF steam engine. I also bought a 30B 300 watt transformer. Not a bad day. Not much O gauge stuff there today but still a good day with my dad and uncle. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

This video showing Postwar AF trains running on a layout in a winter scene is what I'm planning to build next year in the mud room of my house. Very pleased my wife gave me the green light to do so.

Then, I'll have two layouts: current O Gauge layout in basement, and new AF layout above it in mud room.

That will be model train heaven for me.

LOL, Arnold

Arnold,

My fiancee let me set up the Flyer layout last year for Christmas and then said just keep it up. I then had a loop of super O on the floor in the living room. I'd set it up on raceday and run trains then pack everything thing up. Then one day I just moved everything onto the floor in the enclosed porch. I left it down and she never said anything so I've been running O gauge out there. She wants to clean out the other two bays of the garage so we can build a permanent O/S layout. This is why I'm marrying her...LOL.

Dad and I started building the layout at his house (the place I used to live according to him. lol) in 2000. If you see a sceniced layout from me that is most likely that one. At 29 I've been very lucky to have lots of places to run trains.

Can't wait to see your Flyer layout this winter.

Hi Cody,

My Postwar AF layout will happen in the Spring of 2020, after the first bulk trash pick up in the town where I live. When that happens, I can get rid of a lot of stuff for free that currently clutters the mud room of my house (between the main living area and the garage) where the AF layout will be.

Two recent developments made this new AF layout possible.

First, I found my Postwar AF trains, track and accessories that I thought I had either given away or thrown out. It was in boxes in the cluttered mud room. What a thrill it was to find those boxes.

Secondly, the future AF layout was the result of a negotiation between my wife and I that made us both happy. She got my commitment to make the 2nd family room free of my guitars, guitar related equipment, microphone and general mess so it would be pleasant to use as a reading room. I sacrificed one Saturday to remove that stuff and make that 2nd family room pleasant for her, which is now complete. The mud room was not important to her so she was fine with my turning it into a 2nd train room.

I share the above so others may consider similar negotiations with their spouses to make more room for their trains. Arnold

I've found it is not easy to find New Haven or NY Central cabooses. I don't think they made them Postwar, which seems weird to me because those Northeastern railroads are very popular IMO.

So, this scrounger paid a few bucks for a change for these cabooses (about $20 each) at my LHS. The 1st is Williams and the other 2 are MTH:

Arnold,

I love these two purchases.  Great paint on the New Haven and what an interesting small cupola with side lantern on the second NYC. Great prices, too!  Enjoy running them.

Man, that looks like one fascinating book! It can be purchased online, along with volume 1, but it is not available online for free. (I tried, though).

I'm not qualified to discuss the accuracy of his prices, but elsewhere on this forum, they have been criticized: https://ogrforum.com/...l-trains-price-guide

I bought this TCA duplex roomette yesterday.  It will join several other TCA aluminum passenger cars to be repainted/decorated as a Great Northern Empire Builder train.

Other built-for-TCA donors for this project are diner, RPO, full dome, observation, and combo cars.

These cars are great for repaint projects. They can be had for short money as well. I used several of these TCA cars to create the red/silver 1947-1951 Golden State on my layout.

Their availability "for short money" is what got my attention.  And it's been this way for many years, and there doesn't appear to be any shortage of them.

Looks great, Lee!  I have one of the boxcar red Weaver Reading cars.  One of the few Weaver cars I own.  The Green one is a classic, as far as this Western Pennsylvania fallen flag railfan is concerned!

Thanks Mark. I’m with you all the way on that I may live in the Ozarks Foot Hills but I’m Eastern Fallen Flags all the way

Since I can’t make the hike to York this week, I substituted a visit to my favorite train store (aka Grzyboski’s) yesterday to pick up a few items I ordered...

First up, a Lionel D&H caboose... I have to admit, I am pretty impressed by the sharp details of the add-on railings, grab irons, etc. Although it has, what looks to me to be a smoking chimney pipe, there is no smoke - a plus for me as I never use smoke!!! AND, it has the “hidden” coupler release - no thumbtacks.
5B5EBC84-620A-4C79-B714-E6AEFABF33AD

Second is an MTH Schnabel Flatcar... this thing is a beast - while it will probably be a shelf queen (it is WAY too big for everyday running), I’ve always wanted one, and this is a New York Central version (and Joe Grzyboski is looking down and shouting “I told you you were a New York Central guy”!!!).

Finally, I got one of the much maligned Pennsy J1-a (#6434). Personally, I find it to be a really nice engine. Some very nice added detail, the various switches (Run/Prg, Smoke, etc.) are easily accessible on the top of the engine, the lit doghouse and antenna on the tender... and this is one heavy engine!!! As for the whistle, having never heard a J1-a and being as far from a rivet counter as you can possibly get, I like it. It has that haunting whistle in the night sound that is definitely different.

And if you ever had any doubt that I wasn’t a rivet counter...

I've been searching for cheap small necklace chains for my layout that would be close to scale tow chains. Tuesday we stopped at a local flea market, walking around I noticed one seller had several necklaces for $1. each. I bought three. When I got them home I set them in "gun bluing" liquid. Two of the three turned flat black but the third just stayed gold (hmmmm).

First pic is the chains before placed in the gun bluing liquid. Following pix after placed in gun bluing liquid and used on the back of a tow truck and hanging on a barrel.

Received a sheet (8 X 11.5) of custom decals from Switch Line Decals for my Great Northern Empire Builder project; specifically, the F-3 locomotives.  Christine Braden did the artwork and SLD did an excellent job of matching the dulux gold of the vintage Champ passenger car decals I have had for 20+ years.

The models of the GN EB in O scale have all used a distinctly yellow color for the letters and stripes.  The prototype in the mid-50's used dulux gold.  I have the Champ diesel and passenger car decals in dulux gold but they lacked striping.  Microscale's set used the yellow; not the dulux gold.  Hence, Christine did the locomotive decals in dulux gold and sent it to SLD to print.

These decals are another item off the "To Do" list for this project.

Meanwhile, I closely examined the latest primer coat on the six cars for the train for additional flaws; identified them; and, will work to eliminate them later tonight and tomorrow.

Just kidding about the collectability but who knows..... these are decent cars but I hate to say, I wish that they had a little better quality trucks. The CSX gondola's couplers won't stay closed but I've got some tiny black zip ties. I realize for the price they are a pretty good buy.

who knows it might be. There’s a YouTube video showing how to fix that problem with your truck coupler

Lew,  Those are fine looking engines.  Are they conventional or some kind of hi-tech?

I have a prewar set and two 50's steamers coming to the mountain.  Film at 11:00.

Bill, they are Atlas O 3-rail. They run conventional variable voltage AC but do have early (Dallee) electronic reversing units with "sound" incorporated. The sound is a generic burbling more akin to an Alco than an EMD. The mechanism is a superb mid-motor drive with flywheels then u-joints to gear towers in the trucks. Here is a peek under the hood :

       IMG_3998

Those are 4700 mike caps to keep the sound going while cycling the throttle to change directions. It is a very smooth drive system greta for switching at slow speed. They are heavy engines because the only part not die-cast is the cab and cab floor. Frame, trucks, truck side frames and the hood are all metal. There is even an addition metal weight added under the cab floor (seen at the right end of the main frame).

Yes, it is a simple loop around the walls of a12 X 11 room. East End / West End industrial district makes it pretty much a switching pike.

I bought a Southern PS-4 Pacific 4-6-2 locomotive and tender (Lionel 6-11103), for a lot less than retail (on the Sell/Trade Forum), because the trucks on the tender had zinc disease and disintegrated. Engine is fine. I bought a set of trucks on which the tender sits, loose. Nice as long as I don't touch it -- and of course, I'm just displaying it. See attached photos, first of the disintegrated wheel assembles, of the engine and tender, and a close-up of the engine front.
