I made a post a few days ago (which I pulled down) looking for a Norfolk Southern and Virginian Lionel Legacy diesel. I received an offer through email and replied with some additional questions.

He provided me with a price and requested to use Walmart as the method of funds transfer. Personally I use PayPal just for the protection it provides.

I requested pictures and received two pictures, neither of which showed the engine, but it was the correct box. I am watching the same engine on an online sales site and the pictures were identical. The person that emailed me had a Maryland phone number and address while the person selling the engine online with the same pictures had a Michigan address.

I reached out to the person in Michigan to see it it was them that I was emailing but it wasn’t. I politely declined the offer. Upon declining the offer he requested to talk on the phone so I tried to call and instantly received a text.

After a few messages he began to get pushy and then requested partial payment upfront and the remainder upon delivery. I did request his screen name since he clearly got my information from here but so far he hasn’t provided it.

The email used was donnievast@gmail.com and the phone number was +1 (410) 989-9450. His name began as Donnie Evans and became Dennis at some point.

Text messaging is a common tool of scammers. I listed a car on cars.com and immediately got two offers via text message. They wanted to wire transfer funds and buy the car sight unseen. I usually play around and text them back. They always have fantastic stories like being deployed overseas or being on an oil rig in the Gulf. I start to mess with their logic and they stop responding.

Guys...normally (in the past before me) we would take these down because of certain statements within our Terms of Service.  I won't take this down right now but I am going to add to it and then close it.  First, make it easy on yourself....if you get contacted the most important question to ask first is if the person contacting you is a registered member of this forum and if so what they go by in their avatar.  Look it up once you have that info to make sure.  If they are not a member....then run away!  Remember, the only way your email is available is if you have made it available to the membership through your profile.  If you put it in your post, then ANYBODY can see it...even if they are not members.  Bottom line, use some common sense and "don't let your desire to acquire set you on fire making the situation dire"......
