I'm at a loss with my old 283. The e-unit seems to cycle when power is applied but nothing to the engine. Wiring all appears good with conductive checks...no apparent short wiring. SO...wondering about just bypassing the e-unit and wiring up direct to the armature. Thoughts or comments?? Suggestions???

This is done like you would a Lionel motor to run in forward only. Take a wire from the rear truck and connect to the field post. This might be the connection on the left. Connect a wire from the other field connection, should be post number three, to one of the brush connections. Connect a wire from front tender truck to other post, #4. If engine runs the wrong way, reverse the brush connections...

I guess I'm gonna have to do the same thing to a 302AC I have. I've checked and re-checked, re-wired, and cleaned, and mine's doing the same thing.
In the past, I've run a "jumper" wire connecting the 2 center posts, and ran wires from posts 1 and 4 to the tender. Forward only. Can't remember where I read that...

Might be a good idea to check the fingers/drum on the reverse unit. The fingers probably need re-tensioning and cleaning as does the drum as well
Marty...please clarify "post three" and "post#4"...
Ukaflyer....thought of that also. Check and they are making good contact. I put new contacts and brushes in originally...and I've checked the wiring to make sure it was correctly done.

What he means is that if your engine/tender have the plug/socket rather than direct wired version, then you disconnect the 4 wire plug from the engine and then when looking at back of the engines 4 hole board, you need to strap say holes 1 and 3 with a bit of wire, make sure the wires make a good contact inside the holes, and then put the two leads from the transformer to the other two holes. If all is good then the motor will run in one direction. This will prove the engine to some degree.
If it doesn't work then it is going to point to several things, a broken wire to the field, a bad armature or what can sometimes happen is the brushes are stuck in the tubes and not contacting the armature
Good luck!
Ukaflyer...now I understand...BUT this 283 is hardwired...no plug/socket. IF I wire the rear tender to one side of the field post, the other side to one of the brush caps and front tender to the other cap would that work??
Hi,
Best way to do this I think is to put the reverse unit into neutral and with the engine shell off for ease, to then make a connection with a piece of wire from one brush tube to one side of the field coil where the permanent wire connects to it, then to put the transformer to the other brush tube and the other field coil.

Marty...Ukaflyer...Mark...a BIG thank you to all for a successful "operation". I had my AF 293, which I had planned on rewiring with the male-female plugs. Used that one as a test and it worked...just like everyone said.
Thanks again...the best forum there is!!!

You'll have to let us know how you make out with the 283 and what the problem was

This past week I just installed a Lionel LCRU in the tender of my #290, got tired of the Flyer Eunit trouble, this puppy never ran so good, has excellent slow speed ability now...

Hi Steve, I used the one that was in the older GP7's from the 90's. Such as the 18563. Not sure of part number, have also used the AC Commanders from ERR.
