John i have one and i am happy with mine.
Just a thought here (Cab1L's are just fine), but it might be a good time to move up to Legacy? Just in case you ever end up with a Legacy engine, then you will be able to access all of it's features.
I bought one to use as a loaner/back-up for when I take my Legacy to train shows and it is the preferred controller by most of our members. I would say you will be happy.
To each there own, Cab 2 is the Ultimate in Operating Legacy Equiped Locomotives. The initial cost is a little more, but the operating Fun is so much easier. Just an opinion. I would consider Cab 1L as a back up??? Happy Railroading.

I was wondering the same thing, my cab1 still works, but like all things, it will eventually wear out. I opted to get a DCS system instead along with a #50-1032 adapter cable to plug in the command base to it. Since I don't have any legacy loco's, only tmcc and ps2, I thought it was the best choice (for me). No regrets so far....

I completely agree with you but several of my group do not like the size and were intimidated by all the extra icons and features. I personally prefer the Cab2 but so many complained that I got a Cab1L and they love it. So it sits in a tote in between trains shows for them to use at the next show The feedback that I got was they were all used to the Cab1 and they did not have to learn anything new.
Although I feel comfortable with Cab 2, I understand the comfort of Cab 1 as it was really easy to use. The Cab 2, like learning your way around a Computer, or I Pad, or a nice I Phone, is taking the time to learn the System. The old TMCC is not near the Fun of these new Legacy Locomotives, not to mention the new 765 or ES44AC Diesels??? Lionel Legacy has me Excited about Running Trains...Happy Railroading...
I have the legacy system and 2 cab2's yet I still got a cab1L.
you just never know when someone will drop the cab2 and something breaks.
I too had my tmcc locos in the dcs system...but when you need to reprogram its easier if you have a cab 1 or 1l...thanks for the replys i appreciate it..conrail john
I started with TMCC and had Cab 1 but when I purchased my first Legacy engine I wanted access to all of the Legacy features so I had to have the Cab 2. I realize that many here prefer the Cab 2 but for myself and some others in our club the simplicity of the Cab 1L was preferred and that is the way I went and disposed of my 990. The Cab 2 has many more features but can be intimidating.

The Cab1L communicates to the base at a better frequency with no external antenna needed.
That makes it an excellent replacement for the Cab1.

True, but at the end of the day if all you use your computer for is e-mails, some internet surfing and word documents do you really need all the bells and whistles?
I think some folks just run trains, and you do get many if not all the benefits of the Legacy with a CAB-1L. Heck, I am running a Legacy engine with TMCC. G
I have Legacy, but I also have a CAB1-L that I use for TMCC stuff at times. I also like the CAB1-L for younger operators, much less to break if they drop it.
Along with a Cab 1 L remote as back up for my old Cab 1 TMCC remote I need the Cab 1 L Base also--correct?
The CAB1-L talks to either the Legacy base or the BASE1-L. You need at least one of those.
John,
I definitely think rtr12 has a good point, if you can afford a Legacy with the Cab2 go for it, sense you need to replace the cab1, eventually you will want to run Legacy engines any way.

Thanks John
The diversity available via the L Cab and L Base seem to be a good second best.
I sold my original Legacy and haven't bought any Legacy engines--yet. Health issues have placed me on non-volunteer sabbatical for too long and I pretty much have been a dormant operator and collector. Signs are more hopeful for getting back on track soon if nothing else breaks down.
Best wishes for no more bodily malfunctions Dewey!
Dewey,
Best wishes also on getting back on track, hope your health improves.

Thanks Dave--been fighting the medical gremlins since 2010 and I miss running trains and piddling with the layout. Thankfully all rail power and switches were wired in Feb '10 and going under the benchwork is not necessary.
I didn't realize how slow recovery/rehab would be in my old age,.

The icon appear on the keypad identifying the function of each key. The positions and functions are identical to that of the numerical rubber buttons on the cab1 and 1l. The only real difference is you don't need a plastic overlay to know what the keypad functions are, the icons tell you. IMO the icons make it easier.
The cab1l is a great idea, I intend to get one as an extra remote.
Having said that, I started with the old TMCC cab 1 and went over to the cab 2 with little trouble. The "meat and potatoes" train operation is basically the same between the two.
My 9 year old have been running my TMCC crane via the cab2 without issue since she was 6. The icons tell her which button does what.
I think the CAB2 is a great remote, the only knock is that it's a bit on the large side.
