My Legacy setup uses a Hawkins antenna placed high in the room to get some distance for my Cab 2.  However, as many have said, the range for the Cab 2 is still less than for the old Cab 1.  So, particularly when I have people over to the train room, I run trains with the Cab 1 so I don't loose the signal.  Now in the new catalog, the Cab 1L is said to run from the Legacy base.  It would be nice to replace my old Cab 1's with Cab 2's to get the additional features, but I am afraid since it uses the Legacy base that it is running on the same 2.4hz frequency and will have the same distance/interference problems my Cab 2 has.

Am I correct in this assumption?

Hi Jon,

I have only 1.51.  Since I have a Mac, I had to buy the module from you folks rather than use the black module download.

I am curious as to why a new channel would increase the range, and should I just randomly try other ones or is there a preferred channel for better range?

Peter, 1.51 is very recent, and should be better then you describe relative to range.  The channel is just one of those things to try, try 3, 6, 9 - this will give you a decent frequency spectrum to see what happens.

V1.52 was released for the LUG meeting at York; and will be in the latest manufactured 990 sets.  I think 1.52 is available for download, I will check on that tomorrow and make sure it is downloadable.

V1.52 fixed a few bugs in the AUX2 lighting panel and supports the Legacy Station Sounds cars due out later this year; along with some tweaks for the iPad app out shortly.

I may be wrong but I think the frequencies used for Legacy (2.4 gig) are the same as most wireless routers use. Many wireless routers automatically pick the frequency but you can make them stay on one frequency and specify the frequency. If you have Legacy and operate on the same frequency as your wireless devices you are likely to have interference.  All IMO; I have TMCC so I am no expert but I thought I would point this out.  Don

this is true of all electronics today.  plus at least the legacy is backward compatible so if you do not update you are not missing much.

Boy, I got worried when RaifanRon mentioned problems with fluorescent lights interfering with his Legacy signal - I have 13 four tube fixtures lighting my layout (big layout).  So, I tested them this afternoon and fortunately found no effect, positive or negative.

But I did take Jon's suggestion and reset my channel to #9.  By myself, I didn't notice any difference this afternoon but will wait to see when I next have folks over to see if there is an improvement - hope so.
