I’ve had Legacy for 10 years, but I didn’t know until now that the CAB-2 has at least some ability to receive information. Offhand, I don’t know what practical purpose we could use this capability for, but it’s something to think about. First of all, though, I’d like to know how it works.

Maybe this capability is already generally known. I myself learned about it while using the iCab app. At one point, I put down my iPad with the iCab app and grabbed my CAB-2 to do something, and, while I was at it, I decided to change the speed on the CAB-2. When I went back to the iCab app, I noticed that the speed setting on the app matched the new speed I had set on the CAB-2. OK, communication back to the iCab app is perfectly understandable because the iPad is receiving, as well as sending, information via the wi-fi.

However, just for fun, I wondered if it would work the other way. If I changed the speed setting on the iCab app, would the speed setting on the CAB-2 change to match the new setting. I was surprised to find that the answer is yes. My question is, how does this occur? I didn’t know that the CAB-2 has a radio receiver or a wi-fi receiver. But, it must have one or the other, right?

As I simply understand it the the Cab-2 is a two way radio at 2.4GHz (if I remember correctly). When the base is told to send out a signal via the Cab-2 it sends it out on all platforms, meaning both through the serial port and the U-post to the outside rail. As for the main reason why the Cab-2 receives information is because all information except for recordings are saved in the base. If you take your Cab-2 to a different layout you immediately have access to all engines, trains, routes, etc… on that layout. Your Cab-2 will have no memory of your layout.

hope this makes since.

Gentlemen, thank you for explaining. I must have known that at some point, but, clearly, I forgot.

Still, even though the CAB-2 and the base have a bi-directional radio link, does it seem a little surprising that the CAB-2 itself would respond to commands from the base, as when you can watch the speed graph on the CAB-2 moving in sync with speed changes made via the iCab app? Or not? Certainly, it's cool to watch.
