TMCC is better, smoother speed steps.

I'm not sure what the difference in operation is between RS and RS5, does anyone know the difference?

One of the key differences (I forget if there are others) is mentioned in the list SandJam posted.
Prior to RS5, when you hit Aux1, then 2, the "towercom" was unintelligible. RS 5 changed it to actual dialog. (Aux1 then 7 was always understandable from when crewtalk/towercom were first added)

You miss the point Dave. That still does exactly the same thing regardless of which you pick. Picking RS5 won't make the RS4 boards act like an RS5 board.
I never bother to change that from RS5 for any TMCC since I see no difference in operation between the two selections.
I think it just allows you to "label" your engines by their specific features when you load them into the handheld, purely esthetics IMO.
Legacy locos ( obviously) have unique features in some instances. I.E. My m1b has a specific icon for the doghouse light.
Having said that, Lionel may have changed that with the lighting menu of 1.5. I'm still using 1.4.
I think a TMCC loco runs just as good when its addressed and run in TMCC mode without loading the information as it does when its loaded.....purely esthetics.
I understand that the Legacy entries obviously do something different, and the CAB1/TMCC/R100 entries each have a unique characteristic as well. I just never saw any difference between the RS and RS5 entries.
I do like to enter cab numbers and road names for stuff, that's certainly useful.

I never tried it because I have no older engines but what if you picked RS on a RS 5.0 equipped engine (the opposite), would you lose anything? or does it still work the same?
Seems strange to add another entry that does the same thing as RS. Why not just have 2 entries then, either RS (which covers all except Legacy) or Legacy RS
I'm 99.99% sure you'll not see any change. There's no different command being sent out that I'm aware of, it appears to be strictly a cosmetic thing.
