When I fired up my layout yesterday and started running a train, I noticed a clicking sound in the railsounds and that the red activity light on the Legacy 990 base was flashing continuously (like a command is continuously being sent).  The "8" on the CAB2 LCD keypad is continuously highlighted and the adjacent "7" & "9" buttons won't work anymore (the rest respond fine along with everything else on the CAB2). It was working fine the day before and hadn't even been out of the base.   Anyone else seen a symptom like this?  I'm guessing bad keypad but wanted to make sure I'm not missing something obvious before I send it back to Lionel. It's running firmware 1.4 (just because I haven't got around to downloading 1.52). It was bought in Summer 2012 and (with manually turning the charger on & off) worked fine until now.

The keypad is very clean.  I actually still had the shipping film over it and didn't even realize it - removing it didn't seem to change anything. I also turned on the charger and let the batteries top off - no effect there either and the batteries measure fine.

Although reading the symptoms that you describe indicate that this is most likely to be a hardware problem, rather than a software one, have you tried pressing the 'reset' button on the underside of the CAB-2? It can't hurt, and if it is some weird software glitch then it might even cure it.

Otherwise, I'm sure that Lionel will fix it for as fast as they are able to.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies.  I took a closer look last night - even put it under a stereo microscope.  I see nothing dirty or damaged so I guess it is internal.  I saw that reset button but hadn't tried it - I wasn't sure if it would clear all of my settings in it.  Probably have nothing to lose at this point so I'll go ahead and try it this evening.  If that doesn't work, I'll contact Lionel.  Did they repair it or just replace the whole CAB2? Now I just have to figure out what I did with the receipt...

Cheers,

Jim

Lionel replaced the whole thing. I was a little put off since the unit they sent was probably a repaired unit, but it works fine and looked newish.

That's what I was afraid of.  My unit has had very little of the battery/charger issues others seem to be plagued with so I was hoping to hold on to the same one. I had one battery temp issue early on  (the room was very warm that day) and heard of the problems others were having.  I just started turning the charger on only when needed and have had zero problems since.

cjack,,

My CAB 2 was almost 4 Years old. I did NOT have the Receipt. One day I turned it on and the SCREEN was blank. Nothing helped they suggested. Finally they gave me an RA3 #. Sent it in and a week later they sent me a BRAND NEW ONE in a Box. My Layout was only down for 8 Days!!!

GREAT BIG KUDDOS TO LIONEL!!! That's the way to do business!!!!!!

Yes. Lionel has always come thru for me...I didn't mean to complain about my CAB2, my guess is they sent what they had to keep me going.

That's great to hear.  I'll be in touch with Lionel after the holiday weekend. I have been hearing very positive reports of Lionel's service in recent years.  I'm pretty sure I actually do have the receipt, I just couldn't put my hands on it last night. It was bought from a local train store (Trains West in Albuquerque) that unfortunately has since closed and is badly missed by many in the area.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Jim

My Cab 2 handheld has been acting up lately. I installed fresh batteries but I am still having erratic control issues. If I read the thread correctly I can rest the handheld and will not loose any data. Could someone confirm that for me, that being all train data is on the base, or direct me to any documentation from Lionel that references this. I do not want to loose any date or return to a former software version. The handheld and base both have 5.2 version on board. Appreciate.Al

Other than a few handset specific settings, you are correct, the engine database is in the command base.

Bumping this thread with a followup and my kuddos to Lionel!

They got back to me with an R/A# in a day and turned it around in about 2.5 weeks (including shipping time and it being Christmas and New Year's week).  It's been working like a champ since late last week.  They replaced the keypad, performed a charger upgrade and replaced a communication board due to low signal strength.  I hadn't even noticed any signal issues so  that shows they ran it through a thorough check out. As far as I can tell, I did get back the same hardware I sent in.

As an earlier poster put it - Definitely the way to do business!
