Hi Everyone,

I have a well-worn caboose that I removed the trucks from and am going to use it as a railroad trackside office.

Would that be a prototypical use for an older caboose?

Have any of you done one? would there be any skirting around the bottom? Besides landscaping around it and adding people, are there any other things I could do to either make it more authentic and/or just an attractive scenario?

I thank all in advance for your reply. Paul

Paul:  This was a fairly common use of old cars for yard offices, locker rooms, and even RR stations.  The RR's never wanted to spend a lot for the comfort of their employees.  I've even seen where passenger cars were removed from their trucks and used for different purposes.  I think that it was a Milwaukee Road car that was even used as a foot bridge on a golf course.

You could just use your imagination and come up with a lot of ideas of your own and I guarantee that you'd find a prototype for it somewhere, sometime.

Paul Fischer.

I would think local building codes, weather, wildlife habits, and the yard boss would determine skirting needs on each.

A power drop from a utility pole, and/or and the meter! Even mounted on the pole!(era), a woodpile, fuel oil, or propane tank outside, would make it stand out best.

Garbage cans, fenced area, Mailbox, Entrance steps and

 handrails, they would be nice.

Light near the door, potted plant, and/or Office sign are little hints too.

Well used gravel parking lot, a parked hi-rail car/truck. Id put it on a siding like it could still be mobile in minutes if needed, leaving steps and all behind.
