I have an MTH 4-6-4 J-1e PT Hudson Steam Engine w/Proto-Sound 3.0 that will not go any faster than 42 to 50 scale MPH. Even when I use the boost in the DCS it won't go any faster. Any thoughts on what might be wrong? Thanks!

Is the max speed set to that?
Set it higher or reset the engine.
It's set at 120 SMPH.
What voltage is at the rails?
What exactly is your power supply?
Have you perhaps loaded the wrong sound or chain files? If not, have you tried loading the correct chain files for this locomotive? Of course, the actual MTH product number is useful when asking questions like this.
A bad motor will do that too.
Within the operating speed range, does it run at the correct scale speed? And do you get exactly 4 chuffs per driver-wheel revolution?
If you load the engine with a bunch of cars, does the max achievable speed drop?
Are you set to run conventional mode? If so, does the speed also max out at 50 MPH with throttle at full?

- Not sure of the voltage in the track, but all my other locomotives do not do this.
- Have not loaded any chain or sound files.

ALL Good ideas, and this will tell us about the state of the engine.
Did you buy this new? Has anyone altered anything?
What would help you determine if you have some sort of mechanical binding would be a voltage and amp meter. If the engine is drawing excessive current at higher speeds and track voltage drops, it would point to mechanical or motor as pointed out earlier. G
