It's a west coast candy brand, but here is a photo of the See's Candy factory in Los Angeles, with the photo taken from the Expo Train Line Elevated Station.

Really a non-descript industrial style building that should be straight forward to model.  Just add the brand of your choice.

P.S. See's is good!  So is another Central PA chocolate maker - Wilbur in Lititz, PA.  They have a nice train siding (and Reading caboose display) nearby as well.

Many years back, Clark Dunham's team built a terrific layout for a fellow in Iowa that featured one TERRIFIC looking LifeSavers Factory.  It had the makings of a chemical plant, but the colors and design made it really "pop" as a LifeSavers candy factory vs. a rather drab looking warehouse.  As I recall, the overall effect was achieved in combination with a custom-built model along with a fabulous backdrop.

 

So if you're looking to achieve a bit of a whimsical look, definitely check with the folks at Dunham Studios.  They may be able to provide more specifics.  The layout  was featured in "the other big toy train magazine", January 1993 issue, with lots of great pictures.  Staggers the mind to think that was now 22 years ago!!!   

 

Not sure if Valley Junction Toy Train Museum (in West Des Moines, IA) even exists anymore.

Here is a early photo of unloading sugar at the Spangler Candy Factory in Bryan Ohio Every one knows this one as the maker of Dum Dums! This is along side NYC four track main.

 

 

Hershey had silos and a long enclosed rectangular building for boxcars loaded with cocoa beans. YOu could have a backdrop of silos and in front a long building with doors on both ends so boxcars go loaded in one way and out empty the other way.

Another good food business would be a milk condensing plant(Carnation canned milk).

Milk was received from local farms and shipped out in insulated or wood boxcars, also needed coal for the boilers. I imagine if there was a local milk shortage the milk wood come in by milk car. The condensing plants in Michigan where in small towns. and of masonry construction. Goggle milk evaporating plants for photo's and history.

If you are looking for a candy factory, the old Hershey Chocolate factory in Smiths Falls, Ontario provides a smaller option. As you can see in the aerial photo below it is a reasonable size and serviced with a simple siding.

A nice touch you could add would be the water tower with the "Chocolate Capital of Ontario" and hershey logo. You could of course name it for your layout. The factory closed a fe years ago but there are lots of pictures on the web you could use to make a simple factory plan with rail service.

A modern bakery is another factory that would have similar characteristics.  They would all have silos to hold bulk ingredients such as flour, liquid sugar, liquid shorting, and etc.

Here's another, older candy factory.  Wilbur Chocolate Company is located in Lititz, PA (between Lebanon and Lancaster).  They make a product similar to the Hershey Kiss called a Bud.  Buds are less well known, but the taste is out of this world!!!

 

Anyway, here are some photos I shot today of the Wilbur Chocolate Company factory.  The facility is next to the ex-Reading tracks.  Across the street is the Lititz station.

 

 

Yes, that is a Reading caboose at the left side of the photo.  It is a static display.

Here's a better look at the station and the caboose.

Some wall and loading dock detail.  Some DPM or Ameritowne walls would be a good choice for this structure.

Hi Mark • I like your idea of doing the Hershey's Chocolate factory.

      Being from PA, you could take a lot of photos of Hershey's and make it happen on your layout

Is/wasn't a or the Hershey plant there right on the main drag in downtown Hershey?

Relatives toured it once.  Is that gone?  There ought be be plenty of those photos

around.

Yes Colorado highrailer, the old Hershey factory in downtown Hershey, pa is no more.

You may like the Boyer Candy factory in Altoona PA, they make Mallow cups.  They are a few blocks from the train museum.

 

 

 

 

That's correct.  The factory was torn down last year.  The twin stacks survive as do the barberry bushes spelling "HERSHEY COCOA".  The remainder of the Hershey downtown complex (offices, warehouses, packaging centers, and call center) is intact, but the chocolate is made in the modern, nondescript facility I photographed earlier in the thread.

In a candy state like PA, there is no way to please them all.

So to tick them all off evenly, I think Nestle has a Burlington, Wisconsin plant.

But I couldn't find an up-close photo.
