I just receive my new Lionel PRSL H-10 locomotive (item number 6-84949) and everything seems to function as advertised when I run using the ENG ID of 1 as it comes from the factory.  However, I am not able to get any results when trying to program the engine with a new ID number.  I have tried six or seven times and when I press SET, nothing happens and when I move the RUN-PROGRAM switch back to RUN, the engine still responds to ENG 1.

This is a jewel of and engine with the lights, sound, smoke and bell!  I really do not want to send it back to Lionel!

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Don

Don,

It might be a bad Run/Program switch: a faulty switch, pinched wire, or something.

Try running it with the switch flipped to Program, as engine #1. It shouldn’t respond to any “move out” commands in Program mode. If it does, it is a bad switch, it’s really still in Run, and that’s why it won’t allow you to reprogram the number.

(I just had this issue with a VL GG1 that came back from Lionel service with the bad switch)

Let us know what happens.

Craig's advice is good.  The switch might also be rotated in the engine, so Run is program, and Program is run.  I will race you to call Lionel tomorrow.  My H-10 sound started crackling and popping tonight.  Lionel is also replacing my Vision Line GG1 #4913 that was back for repairs three times and Lionel cannot repair it.  I haven't been able to reach Katie by phone.  She has been working on a replacement engine for over a month.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

I just checked and the engine runs with the RUN/PROGRAM switch in either position.  Is this a relatively easy engine to take the boiler off and check the switch or should I just contact Lionel.

Thanks for the help!

I would call and get a return authorization tomorrow morning, take advantage of the waranty, and let them fix it.

Its up to you but if it appears the shell comes off easily I would take it off and have a look. We are reading more and more about this issue so maybe that factory got a batch of bad switches, but it only takes a few minutes to pull the shell. Maybe its a connector. It will take longer to pack it up or make the call plus not being a Vision engine its your dime(s) to ship.
