Folks,

I am starting to be a little bit desperate here. I know that the NCE 408 decoder is widely used in the world of O scale and I wanted to install one in my engine, because of the presence of the two electric motors.

I am using a LENZ DCC system and have programmed in the past, Lenz decoders of all kinds, Digitrax and even small NCE such as the D13SR. All always worked fine and responded to my programming.

This NCE 408 is brand new out of its bag (I have three like this one) although it has a manufacturing date of 2004. Whenever I placed it on the Programming track to change the address, I get an error X02 which means that there is no connectivity with the decoder. The decoder is directly wired to the DCC system (I am bringing up) and the electric motor is not even wired yet. I cannot get any of the function outputs to work either, even using the default address of 03.

I have tried using a small resistor of 10 ohms in series with the decoder, as sometimes programmers do not like to facee capacitors, and the NCE 408 has one on the printed circuit board. Nothing does it.

I was wondering if people on this forum have had any luck programming these beasts (I know they do because some talk about the NCE 408) and more specifically with a LENZ DCC system.

If nothing does it, I am ready to return all my NCE 408 in their original unopened bag to NCE and move back to LENZ or Digitrax decoders.

Thanks for your time.

Yves

Yves, I've never had any problems programming the NCE 408 but I have a NCE system. The NCE 408 decoder gives the motor a short pulse of electricity when you change one of the parameters such as the address. The very slight movement of the motor tells the user that the programming was accepted by the decoder. I am wondering if the 408 needs to have the motor connected to complete the programming task you are attempted to do. I've never attempted to program a 408 without the motor connected so I don't know if that is the error one would see. Either that or perhaps this particular decoder is bad.

I can't think of any reason why a Lenz system could not program a NCE decoder especially since as you mentioned you were able to program the smaller decoder. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Folks,

That was it: once I connected the motor, it was a breeze and all programming went fine.

Again, many thanks for your great help and recommendations. I suppose, I have been toying with so many static decoders that I forgot that you have to have a motor sometimes.

Jerry,

Thanks for the offer. As a matter of fact, I was thinking of bringing the Jawn Henry to your place to try it out and make odd ball pictures of a N&W Monster in a Californian landscape. I am waiting for parts from Sunset and as soon as it runs I will be at your place (a transmission axle was bent). It will be DCC equipped of course #2300.

Thanks and best memories.

Yves
