Caustic lubricants

The recent comment made by a Lionel rep about caustic lubricants made me curious.
So I did a little searching on lubricants and ZAMAC.
According to what I found, using lubricants based on animal products on ZAMAC isn't the best idea.

Are any of the lubricants available in the USA based on animal products?

Of course I have no idea whether this is what happened at the Lionel factory.

The article states: "Lubricants based on animal products should be used with caution because they contain acids formed by oxidation, but purely mineral lubricants are generally satisfactory."

That's a very interesting report on the zinc properties. Thanks for posting! I'm surprised about the effects of locale.

I don't know that the information I found has anything to do with Lionel's problem.

Correct, understood. But it would be interesting to know what product caused so much damage on some of Lionels couplers.
