I'm going to cast a "write-in" vote. Perhaps another option would be a model of a locomotive which the kids might see at a grade crossing or station in your area today. I've always found youngsters responsive to something they see in the real world. Here in New Jersey, Conrail, CSX, NJ Transit and NS are popular with the kids. Just a thought...

UP Centipedes are the only ones that sold out. Theyre both impressive locos but having both of them the Big Boy is far more interesting to kids, has way more fancy doo-dads. But im still gonna double head em
I would like to add another Loco to our layout, and wanted to know if the Lionel Vision Line Pilot Centipede or Vision Line 4014 Big Boy would be more appealing to kids. I am thinking the Big boy, please let me know what you think.

Well, get it painted in UP....much easier to do than a steam Pilot loco

Big Boy ...
I will be going will both of them. I think I want to get the centipede painted with Milwaukee Road Colors orange body, maroon hood on the nose and black roof. It will look like the UP version of the centipede. What do you think?
Kids like anything from Sodor.
Centipede and Big Boy, not so much.
Paint your Big Boy blue and call him Big Gordon.
Paint your Centipede black and call him Long Diesel...
Or... buy all the characters of Sodor that have been made and save some money.
