I just received my MTH 20-3564-1 2-8-0 PRR-Reading Seashore lines steamer and really like it except I didn't realize it has freight yard proto effects instead of the passenger proto effects. I believe this engine primarily hauled passengers to the Jersey shore and that is the sounds I wanted. Is it possible to switch out the freight effects for the passenger effects that are in the MTH 20-3627-1 PRR-Reading Seashore lines 2-4-2 Atlantic. If so is it complicated? I am running DCS. Thanks for your help.

Dominic,

Yes, it's possible and no, it's not overly complicated.

You would need, in addition to your DCS set, the following;

  • The sound file rom the 20-3627-1. This should be available for download from MTH's web page for the engine.
  • The DCS Loader Program, available fro free download at this link.
  • A Windows PC.
  • A cable to connect the TIU to the PC. The cable varies depending up on whether your PC has serial COM ports or USB ports, and whether you have a Rev. L TIU or an older model.

For instructions as to how to actually transfer the sound file, refer to either MTH's instructions or, even better, The DCS Companion 3rd Edition, Part VIII - Software Upgrading and Remote Backup/Restore.

The only drawback to this process is that, if the two engines have different speed control characteristics (driver size, gear ratio, etc.) the speed of the updated engine may be off a bit as compared to the speed displayed in the DCS Remote's screen.

DCS Book CoverThis and a whole lot more is all in “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!"

This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!
