I have two \ps2engines on the track in the off mode and 18 volts on the track. How long should I leave them in this mode to properly charge the batteries? I assume the batteries will charge when the engines are not making any sound. Thank you in advance for advice.

Yes, they charge when silent. 10-12 hours should be enough for a full charge.
Note that for $15 you can have the MTH charger which is a better way to charge them, as it doesn't run up the operating hours timer while charging.
thanks john
GRJ gives good advice. Not only does it avoid running up the timer, but some event can't cause the locos to start moving in stealth mode. Also see another thread about the risks (if any) of leaving a transformer on when no one is near.
IronLake2,
I still recommend the BCR in every P2 engine, it eliminates a lot of problems, no need for a charger with the BCR.

when you 1st turn on the track power with a bcr, how long do you wait to call up the engine for the bcr to charge?
If you wait a minute, it should be fine. It's usually quicker, but you're safe at a minute.
ironlake,
10 to 15 sec usually does the trick for all my engines, unless they have been on display for a while, then the full minute is required.
