I was given this MTH Premier 4-4-2 Atlantic for repair.  Symptoms where only runs in forward, constant bell and no tender lights/markers.

This was an original PS-2 5V engine that was rich with features using MUX boards to control 2 sets of engine marker, Head light, Cab light, Fire box plus the tender marker and reverse light.  $700 engine.  The 5V board originally failed and it was sent to a LHS for repair.

When I opened it this is what I had found:

Instead of repairing with a PS-2 3V with 5V connectors, they gutted the engine and just upgraded it using an upgrade kit.  This removed the engine  markers, cablight and fire box.  Removed mux.  In the tender removed the markers also, stripped out the harness that allows the shell to be removed and separated from the chassis.

But the worst was they just epoxied the circuit board to the shell, free mounted battery, didn't use a speaker gasket, exposed wire wraps, rat nest wiring, and crushed wires as they put the shell on.

Effectively turning a Premier engine into a RTR engine.  So choose your repair facility and tech carefully.  G

George, was the person who did this butcher job a certified MTH trained tech?   I know many lie who are not certified.   That job comes under the heading of malicious damage.  If it went to you first it would be on the layout and operating.  I hope you are not going to fix it.   Not worth beating yourself up over.  Time can be directed to other items.  No matter how much you could charge for that job you will loose money.

Like I said Marty, it's been years of talk and no action in regard to any school at Lionel.  I don't really have many issues repairing this stuff, but it would be nice to be "officially certified" in some cases.  I would also like to have some access to more service information like you get with the MTH ASC training.  It makes a world of difference in the speed of a repair at times.

I didnt become interested in attending the school until 2011. At which point I emailed Lionel and MR said hed put me on a list and be in touch. Then I heard something about no more service centers and there would only be "Lionel Help Centers" and then there woudl be some online training classes for the "Help Center" certification and then the line went dead

Well there is definitely a high demand. Especially since Lionel is not servicing any product older than 5 years.  I would like to minimize shipping expenses and damage. Who is close to S.E. Michigan?

Would be nice to have a sticky up top with a list of repair guys, their specialty in repairs, and their locations... just an idea.

Signed, stuck with some shelf queens....

Roman,

Send me me your address ASAP.  Obviously are a man in serious need of some duct tape to tidy up that tiny mess

And watch The Red Green Show for pointers on it's proper use, he is a duct tape expert.

As for pictures posted by GGG above, if I had done that to someone else's engine, I believe would have bought them a brand new one as a replacement.
