I recall reading a comment by another forum member that Lionels more recent legacy steamers sound like someone beating a steel trash can with a bat.

I made a comparison of Lionels first generation legacy PE/PM Berkshire (which Imo has one of the most realistic sounding chuffs) to the recent legacy ESE hudson.

What say you?

The ESE sounds better, for sure. The Berk sounds just fine. Not all real steamers sounded the same.

My TMCC ESE probably sounds better than both of them, but has only 2 chuffs.

"Realistic?  We're running these on three-rail track inside a house!"

Indeed - always good to remember. So long as the sound - and I don't need it at all, really - is properly plausible and evocative, I'm happy. I can live with 2 chuffs; 1 makes me crazy, and I turn it off.

Generally, it does not have to be right; it just can't be wrong, if that makes any sense to anyone else.
