Chuff or Trashcan

IDK? IMHO, I like the second one better. The first Chuff seems "tinny".

It sounds like the ESE has less treble in the recording.

I have been disappointed by live steam engines, wanting the some thunder.

I like the enhanced bass for the toy effect, but the Berk sounds realistic.

I like the fact that different models have a different chuff sound, makes life more interesting when running a few steamers together.

Realistic?  We're running these on three-rail track inside a house!

The ESE sounds better, for sure. The Berk sounds just fine. Not all real steamers sounded the same.

My TMCC ESE probably sounds better than both of them, but has only 2 chuffs.

Both engines sounds great to me.  Heck I even like the very first sounds o steam from the late 70's.

Legacy has more base, I think. Tho don't throw the one out, give it to me...lol

I agree with John (GRJ) that not every steam engine should sound the same. Both engines sound fine with me, although I do prefer the deeper sound of the NYC Hudson. I have a Legacy GS4 4-8-4, which I could listen to all day long.

My only question is if the forum member  was actually referring to the chuff or the banging and creaking noises that Legacy steamers make. That seems a bit more feasible given the trash can/bat description but then again I have not seen the original post you are referring to. 

Both sound sets are good, but the sound of the Dreyfus Hudson is more desirable in my opinion.

Well for one thing 1225 is still around and can be recorded.  If Lionel has done that who knows.  The Hudson on the other hand is a guess what they sounded like.  Even with recording from 60 years ago would be far from ideal.  Less than perfect recording devices of the 1950's and degrading from age.

RickO, you hit the nail on the head!!! The Berk sounds like a chuff, and the Hudson sounds like, well,... A TRASHCAN!!!

P.S. I do not like the new creaking noises either.

Not many people are still here that can say a steam whistle sounds correct or not.    Yes, they are expensive toys.  The good thing is you have the choice to buy or not buy.  Enjoy your trains and have fun.

They both sound fine, if I were hearing the sound of a ball bat on a can I might consider visiting the local audiologist for a check

I like both, though I think the more recent chug on the Empire State has a more of that 'thunderous' effect I see on most of the steam engines I see.

Personally though, the chugging on the 2014 NKP 765 is so far my favorite. It has the overall best rhythm to it and I never get tired of it.
