Years ago I purchased 8 boxed aluminum scale streamline passenger cars at a train show.  These are unfinished (i.e. no trucks, couplers, lighting, badges, etc.).  I bought them intending to finish them and run them on a hi-rail club layout and set them aside as I got busy with other projects for my home layout, and then went away from the hobby for nearly 10 years.

If anyone has any familiarity with these cars, I'd like to know.  I'd especially like to know how to finish them; at least to equip them with trucks and couplers.  There are no firm plans for these cars (keep "as is," finish them, or sell), and the length, window configuration, etc. hasn't been checked by me so, for example, a box with handwritten "ATSF 70' Baggage Car" has not been verified.  Likewise, a box marked "PRR Senator Parlor" hasn't been verified; and not all boxes contain such notations--very confusing for me.

FWIW, the extrusion seems to be highly similar, if not identical, to that used by Lionel on its corrugated sided cars.  One interesting feature is the vista dome that's included.  It consists of two halves divided lengthwise of very heavy metal.  I have some spare Lionel vista domes and intend to check their fitment--there are three domes among the 8 cars.

Bottom line, I don't know what I have or how to finish them.  So, information from you good folks would be most welcome.

Marty, thanks for the reply.  It's been 10+ years since I opened even one box, but you are right; I do recall that Masonite or some similar product was used; slides in just like a Lionel car.

I'll probably go through each box tomorrow to reacquaint myself with what's in them.

Marty's reference to 30 years ago is spot on.  At least one of the vista domes (that have no windows installed) are wrapped with newspaper dated 1982!

Thanks, again, Marty.

He got Lionel to run their extrusion for him - or got Lionel's supplier to do it.  His mistake was in not using the baggage car extrusion, which was pretty darn close to a Budd car.  The ones he did run have a letterboard on the lower half, and as far as I can tell, there is no known prototype for that.

the extrusions were done with 2- rail in mind, so floors, couplers, etc. were up to the kit builder.  A table saw and some clear pine makes very good floors, keyed to the inner shelves of the extrusion.

He did supply the Lionel plastic ends, which fit perfectly and looked good.

Since this is the 3- rail forum, let me recommend K-Line Budd cars - they came in various lengths, and were much more accurate models.

For Santa Fe modelers, Budd baggage and postal cars came as short as 66', which is awfully close to 15" in O Scale.
