I'm posting this here, because the example happens to be HO; but it could apply to any scale.

The recently acquired Alco Models RSD4/5 showed typical tarnish from being 40-plus years old. I did a couple of old candle-stick holders using an old stand-by; "Bon Ami", so I thought I might try it on this loco.

I haven't done the short hood yet; here is how it's looking so far:

Just thought I'd pass this on to those (like me) who have to rely on something other than an ultrasonic cleaner...

...and so I did; holy cow! eek

I bought "Barkeep's Friend" only because I was finding it difficult to find "Bon Ami"...and I am completely stunned. It worked faster and (I think) did a better job, so I went back over everything to blend it in...

Thank you "Bob2" for the brilliant suggestion; if I didn't know better, I'd think you had worked in brass before!

Any residue left from the Barkeep's Friend that might interfere with painting? Or, is there a paint prep step in between?

Those are good questions; I don't know. I rinsed the heck out of it after I was done. I actually wasn't planning on painting this, so I hadn't given that any thought...maybe a quick vinegar bath? Bob2? Can you answer this?
