I had a discussion with the owner of a decal company that makes train decals. I ordered a set of his excursion Locomotive decals. The 844 and the 4014 numbers as well as the Union Pacific on the side of the tender are light gray. I wrote him and said that on the locomotive they look bright white. He wrote back and said I was wrong and the prototypical colors on the side are either a light gray or a silver and that the sun made them look white in the photos. I have looked closely at my MTH Challenger 3985 and it looks white to me. My Big Boy 4009 looks like a silver. When I look at the restored 4014 and the 844 (after it was returned to the black color, looks white to me. I have a gray tone 811 that I am thinking of converting to the black 844. Opinions on the numbers and letters color?

@Hot Water can confirm but AFAIK all steam locomotive lettering on UP Black should be “aluminum silver” Lionel also randomly gets theirs correct and wrong.
Light Aluminum or any number of other names it goes by typically renders as white or a very light gray in photographs. The same thing is true with Southern locomotives. What appears to be white is actually light aluminum.

Correct, i.e. ALL Union Pacific steam locomotives had "aluminum" lettering AND numbering. They were NEVER white, but sometimes the weathered/faded aluminum might LOOK a little gray. If your decal supplier says they are aluminum (some say 'silver'), then he is correct.
Thanks!
