Yesterday, while mini-Muffin and Texas Toast ran the store, I set out to work on expanding the benchwork on the Muffin's new layout. Four of our friends showed up to lend a hand, and we completed all of the benchwork, plus they installed about 1000 linear feet of train shelves under the layout - it's ready for wire!

Terry, Bill, Kevin and, not pictured, Jeff were a tremendous help to Tanya "the Queen of Korber" and me. Thanks guys!

Mrs Muffin missed out - she is away this weekend - and we know how she loves power tools!

I like to use L-Girders, made by capping a 1 x 4 with a 1 x 2, for the basic frame of the layout, but given the size, we used all 2 by 4's and then I will add 1 x 2's to the upper edge to give me the screwing surface I need to secure the 1 x 4's that go on top.

The new layout is 54' in length and 34' feet wide.

We will recreate a lot of the scenes from the layout in Carmel, but there are lots of new features planned.

Amazing how fast you were able to breakdown and re-start.!! Can you share a track plan yet?

See you at York

Well, I have a plan, but Mrs Muffin didn't like it, so I am sort of winging it..... I have a pretty good idea - but I haven't drawn it up - four levels..... I am shooting for being able to run 50 trains at once...... we could do in the 30's in Carmel. Of course, I had to have help running it.

Steve, that is fantastic.  That is a lot of lumber and lots and lots of saw dust. )   I'm really anxious to see the progress on this new layout.  The new one sounds to be much improved over your old one and it was really great to say the least.  You can bet I'll be watching this one closely to help give me ideas for the frame work.  It's been a long time since I've built a layout and a lot has changed since then.

Thanks for sharing,

You get 50 trains moving at one time I'll make the drive from Long Island!!! I will also drag Ben Fioriello along with me

That was quick! You are off to a fast start. It is amazing how fast you got all that taken apart, moved and settled in and are already building a new layout and ready for wire.

And now 50 trains at once! Oh my, that's certainly a lot of finger poking and knob twisting all at one time! You will have to hire an octopus to manage the remotes! I will have to try and schedule a visit, Google says about 8 hours drive time.
