Construction is almost complete on my new 'round-the-tree standard gauge layout.
Warning: this is what happens when you go to York and decide it's time to dive into Standard Gauge Tinplate!!!
The big hole in the center is the spot where the tree will be on its base which is the same height. I had to either build a layout strong enough to support the tree (and there would be no way to reach it to decorate) or decorate the tree, THEN put the layout around it in pieces... I went with plan B.
The gray paint is to match the gray carpet that will go on top so that the wood doesn't show if the carpet isn't a perfect cut. Trim boards will cover the outside edges.
The two small "bridges" are added to the setup after the big pieces are placed on either side of the tree. They are held in place with a grooved slot that keeps the pieces from separating.
Whether or not this all works is still up in the air!
