Everything appears to be working properly except the smoke unit. It seems to generate the same amount of smoke no mater what setting I set on the CAB-2. I have tried to reset the engine by pushing the R button on the CAB-2 but it doesn't seem to have any affect on the smoke unit. Is there any other way to reset the engine other then the R button on the CAB-2. If not what is best way to figure out if it is the smoke unit or the control board is the problem.

The way you reset this locomotive is to set it's TMCC ID. You can simply set it to the same as it already is if you just want to reset the features.
Have you tried using the CAB1 instructions from page #22 of the User's Manual?

Since its a Legacy engine with Odyssey II and I loaded the module they sent with the engine I thought that the CAB-2 controller would control the smoke generation? The page calls for using a CAB 1 and a trainmaster base. The display I get on the CAB-2 does not what is in the owners manual. CAB-2 shows the rule 17 input board (LEGACY Equipped" DIESEL & DIESEL Switcher ENGINE Touch-Screen Icons). I never get the underway screen. I have done a reset per page 27 but I never get the underway screen. My CAB-2 is upgraded to V1.6.
The CAB2 should control it, but since that's documented in the manual, I have to wonder if they used the old TMCC smoke controller and are looking for that command sequence. It's certainly worth a try, it won't hurt anything.
Sometimes the modules don't load correctly. Using the Cab 2 info section make sure the engine is loaded as Legacy, not TMCC.

I did what you both said to do and the engine just generates the same level of smoke smoke no matter what the setting and will not turn off unless the no smoke switch under it is thrown. I used a CAB-1L for the TMCC controller since I don't have a TMCC base wired into my layout.
Generating the same level of smoke and not turning off under command control indicates the smoke voltage regulator has died.
Here's the Lionel Parts Page for 6-38472. Since this is a newer model with the RCMC, all the smoke functions are controlled by that board, the bad news is it's a $120 board!
What does the PCB board on the smoke generator do?
It just holds the smoke resistor, I don't see any active components on it.
I have one more question. How do I get the shell off. This is not your standard Lionel diesel setup of 2 screws at either end. It has the drive train exposed with the switches in the middle on a built up block and couplers at either end appear to be held in place by small screws. Nor does the shell appear to be a snap on.
Never took the shell of one of those, so I really can't say without seeing it. I've never failed to get a locomotive apart, but until I've worked on a specific model that different like this one, I don't know for sure what would spring the shell.
