Hi folks,

I just bought a used MTH Proto 2.0 ABA F-3 set online. When I opened it today, it has 2 rail Kadee couplers instead of standard couplers.  I tested it and it runs in 3 rail with the pickups as per normal.

I know nothing about these couplers. Do I have reasonably simple options to convert back? I’m also concerned as of course these engines are equipped with command couplers so I’m hoping that doesn’t complicate things more. Please see pictures. Thanks for your thoughts.

G

Normally, folks put the coupler and T bar mount back in the box.  Yes, there should be a 2 pin connector in the engine, and you should be able to reattach normal proto couplers back on the engine.  G

Thanks G. So what would be the part name for the couplers I would need? Is this something I can do myself. I’ve tried to find some online info and haven’t found any so far. One thought I had was to leave the 2 rail in place except for the rear one which would need to be a 3 rail coupler to connect to my rolling stock. I imagine I wouldn’t run this typically out of the ABA format of the engines as they are tethered. Am I missing anything else?

Thanks I don’t have a repair shop anywhere within 3 hour drive so I’m a bit stuck.  Thanks

Gerhardt.

I had a similar situation with two engines. On one engine I was able to track down the part and convert back to the three rail coupler.

On the second unit, I was able to convert one end of a garnering car to kaydee coupler - I will always have to use that car in m y consist.

i have had minimal luck using the Kadee knuckle to knuckle with a three rail coupler. Works most of the time but just not reliable.

converting one car as a go between the kaydee and three rail was pretty easy.

both engines were proto 2 and steam - so my work was on the tender. Fortunately for me the part number for the 3 rail coupler was in the manual, however, only for one of the tenders. I would assume(?) the part number would be good for any proto 2?
