What do I need electronically to convert a powered (2 can motors), slave A unit, to a lead control A unit...i.e. forward/reverse etc.

This A unit is a K-line, E8/9 engine from an ABA set that has one control A unit and the others are "powered slave" units with can motors only. I figure I might as well convert one of the slave units to a control unit if I is possible.

Thanks for any information/suggestions.

If the unit already has motors, then all you would need to do is add a reverse unit. Dallee Electronics offers several models rated at 4 amps or more, which would be ideal for your application because the locomotive has a higher current draw due to the dual motors. Dallee also includes instructions on how to add directional lighting control too.

If you are looking to add extra features such as speed control, smoke, sounds, or TMCC functionality, the best products would be the Cruise Commander and RailSounds Commander from The Electric Railroad Company. If you use MTH's DCS package, then a Protosounds 2 Upgrade kit would be the right part to purchase.

Good luck with your project!
