Ok, so I found some pictures...

Would it be safe to say, that the usual location for steam locomotives was the engineer's side, front tender truck, trailing axle and engineer's side, front truck, trailing axle for diesel locomotives?

Of course, like everything else, I see some exceptions:

  • Alco RS-32s had them on the engineer's side, front truck, lead axle...
  • EMD GP7s had them on the engineer's side (long hood forward), rear truck, lead axle and(?) the fireman's side, front truck, lead axle.
  • EMD GP9s: Fireman's side (short hood forward), front truck, trailing axle.
  • Alco RS-1s: Fireman's side (long hood forward), rear truck, trailing axle.
  • EMD GP35: Engineer's, front truck, lead axle.

One last question... I ordered both shows from Des Plaines; which shoe is correct for the NYC?  They both said they were O scale; but one is half the size.

Ron H,

When modeling the Santa Fe, remember that those intermitant automatic train stop shoes were removed at Fort Madison, Iowa on eastbound trains and then reinstalled at Fort Madison on westbound trains. The shoes apparently would not clear some things going into the station in downtown Chicago.

Very nice modeling job, and in my opinion they don't look too large. I remember the real ones were pretty darn big and heavy.
