I have an MTH Girard baggage car in nickel trim that I'd like to convert to brass.  The number plate and door handles are readily available on ebay but the brass journals are not.  I have some questions about this.

1) Are these brass journals a tough find?

2) The journals look the same on my Comet cars and State cars.  Are they in fact the same?

3) Do you have any sources for Standard Gauge Lionel parts other than ebay?

I'm beginning to wonder if I should find a prewar beater Girard car and rob the parts.  Thanks in advance.

Here's a picture of the car I'm looking to convert.

Thanks, Steve.  It looks like I would need to buy two complete MTH truck assemblies.  They're $40 each though.

I don't think I want to put over $100 into this project.  Probably should wait for the brass version to pop up on ebay.

It's strange that the smaller journal boxes are ubiquitous on the used market but the passenger car variety are nowhere to be found.

Most likely these are brass plated with nickel. Not easy to polish off the nickel while mounted but you could replate them with brass plating. Caswell plating has a brass brush plating set for around 40 bucks if you decided to go that route. They could be left on the truck, just make sure to rinse off the solution when finished.

I use their tin and nickel plating sets to restore Post War and pre war parts. No skill required.

Pete
